The launch of Garryana 9 marked a historic moment for Westland, as it witnessed its busiest day to date with over 500 whiskey enthusiasts turning up to celebrate the occasion. Fans were eager to not only purchase a bottle of the limited-edition whiskey but also to meet the distillery’s team and witness the live construction of the Garry Oak barrels, which play a critical role in the maturation of the whiskey. The passion and enthusiasm of the Westland community were evident, highlighting the growing fan base and support for the brand.
Garryana Edition 9 is a part of Westland’s Outpost Range, which focuses on exploring the unique flavors of single malt whiskey by emphasizing the key ingredients of barley, peat, and oak. The Garryana expressions have always showcased the Pacific Northwest's terroir, and the 9th edition stays true to this mission with its use of Quercus Garryana, a rare oak species native to the region. This oak imparts a distinctive flavor profile that has become a hallmark of the Garryana series.
A key feature that sets this release apart from previous editions is the use of Oloroso Sherry casks for the first time in the Garryana series. In past releases, Westland had used Pedro Ximenez (PX) Sherry casks, which are known for their sweeter and thicker characteristics. Oloroso Sherry, on the other hand, is known for its nutty, dry, and oxidative qualities, bringing a savory edge to the whiskey. Shane Armstrong, Westland’s Master Blender, shared that this shift in cask type has resulted in a whiskey that contrasts with previous editions, offering a more nuanced and savory flavor profile. Armstrong emphasized that this combination of Garry Oak and Oloroso casks was a first for Westland and one they plan to continue exploring in the future.
Garryana 9 was matured for a minimum of 60 months, with the whiskey aged in a mix of Virgin Garryana Oak casks, first-fill ex-bourbon casks, and first-fill ex-Oloroso Sherry butts. This aging process ensures a complex flavor profile that reflects the distillery’s commitment to innovation and craftsmanship. The mashbill for this edition consists of Washington Select Pale Malt, Munich Malt, Extra Special Malt, Pale Chocolate Malt, and Brown Malt, contributing to the rich and full-bodied nature of the whiskey.

As with previous editions, Garryana 9 is bottled at 50% ABV (100 proof) and is available in limited quantities. Only 6,600 bottles were released, making it a highly sought-after collectible among whiskey enthusiasts. The retail price for the bottle is set at $149.99, and it was initially available for purchase exclusively at the Seattle distillery on November 9. Starting November 11, the whiskey became available through Westland’s online shop, and it began arriving at retailers nationwide on November 15.
Tasting notes for Garryana Edition 9 describe the whiskey as having a nose of burnt marshmallow, biscuit, mocha, and almond cream, with hints of ground clove, cinnamon stick, and faint peppermint on the palate. The finish is said to evoke bread pudding, creating a warm and comforting sensation. These flavors highlight the intricate balance between the Garry Oak, the Sherry casks, and the base malts used in the production.
Westland’s dedication to quality and innovation has earned it recognition as one of the leading producers of American Single Malt Whiskey. The distillery was founded in 2010 and has since been at the forefront of the American Single Malt movement. In 2017, Westland was acquired by Remy-Cointreau, further expanding its reach and influence in the global whiskey market. Westland played a pivotal role in the establishment of the American Single Malt Whiskey category, helping to create the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission, which advocates for the official recognition of the category by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). The final ratification of this category is expected to be announced in the fall of 2024.
The Garryana expressions, including Edition 9, are part of Westland’s ongoing effort to explore and highlight the unique characteristics of the Pacific Northwest. As a founding member of the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission, Westland continues to push boundaries and redefine what American single malt whiskey can be. The distillery’s Outpost Range also includes Colere and Solum, two other limited-edition expressions that reflect the same dedication to exploring the core elements of single malt whiskey.
The release of Garryana 9 is a testament to Westland’s commitment to craftsmanship, innovation, and its loyal fanbase. The distillery continues to experiment with different cask types and maturation techniques to create unique expressions that showcase the distinct flavors of the Pacific Northwest. Whether you are a seasoned whiskey connoisseur or a newcomer to the world of American single malts, Garryana Edition 9 is a must-try for anyone interested in the evolving landscape of American whiskey.
