Great Peated Whiskies That Are Not Scotch

Smoke Without Borders: The World of Non-Scotch Peated Whisky

Peat has long been synonymous with Scotland, particularly the windswept distilleries of Islay, but the smoky landscape is far wider than that. Distillers around the world are producing peated whiskies using different methods to introduce smoke — some buy peated malt from Scottish maltsters and distill it thousands of miles away, while others cut peat from local bogs or use entirely different fuels altogether. What makes these non-Scotch expressions so compelling is that the character of peat changes dramatically depending on its geography: Finnish freshwater peat, Indian tropical conditions, and American bog-sourced malt all yield something meaningfully different from the salt and iodine of classic Islay. The phenols absorbed during malting, measured in parts per million (PPM), give a rough guide to intensity, but the source of the peat and the local climate during maturation shape the final flavour just as much. For whisky drinkers willing to look beyond Scotland, this is one of the most exciting frontiers in the category right now.

Connemara Peated Single Malt: Ireland's Smoky Outlier

Ireland's whiskey tradition long favoured the clean, triple-distilled style that deliberately moved away from peat, making Connemara a genuine anomaly in its home country. Produced at the Cooley Distillery in County Louth, it is one of just a few Irish whiskies that revive the old tradition of drying malted barley over peat fires — a practice known locally as 'turf' smoking that was once common in rural Ireland. The result is a distinctly accessible smoky whiskey, delivering heather freshness, honeyed smoke, and floral notes alongside barley sweetness, making it approachable even for those new to peated styles. It is double distilled and rested in ex-bourbon barrels, bottled at 80 proof, and priced in the affordable range — a rarity for a whiskey with this much personality. For anyone curious about peated Irish whiskey, Connemara remains the benchmark from which all other Irish smoky expressions are measured. Buy it now!

Teeling Blackpitts: Dublin's Triple-Distilled Smoke

Named after a historic industrial area of Dublin with deep links to the city's malting heritage, Teeling Blackpitts is one of the most decorated peated whiskies made outside Scotland. It claimed the title of World's Best Irish Single Malt at the 2021 World Whiskies Awards, a remarkable achievement for a whiskey that openly challenges convention. Unlike most peated expressions, Blackpitts undergoes triple distillation — an Irish hallmark — which refines the smoke without stripping it, then matures in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-Sauternes French wine casks, a pairing that adds layers of stone fruit and floral sweetness to the smoky base. Bottled at 46% ABV and non-chill filtered, the result is a whiskey where peat and elegance coexist rather than compete. It is a bold, unconventional release from one of Dublin's leading independent distilleries.

Amrut Peated: India's Tropical Take on Smoke

Amrut Distilleries, founded in Bengaluru in 1948, began releasing high-quality single malts in the early 2000s, and its peated expression has since become a benchmark for non-Scotch smoky whisky. The distillery uses 100% peated barley sourced from Scotland, peated to 20–25 PPM, which is then mashed, distilled, and matured in Bengaluru at around 3,000 feet above sea level — a climate so intense that whisky ages approximately 3.5 times faster than it would in Scotland, with roughly 12% lost to evaporation annually. This accelerated maturation gives Amrut Peated a richness well beyond its four-to-six years in former bourbon barrels, with tasting notes of earthy peat, vanilla, dates, smoked meats, toffee, and citrus. Bottled at 46% ABV without chill filtration or artificial colouring, it consistently draws comparisons to Caol Ila 12 from reviewers who taste it blind. The cask strength version, pushing past 62% ABV, intensifies everything further and is considered one of the finest value peated whiskies in the world. Buy it now!

Paul John Bold: Goa's Fully Peated Single Malt

Paul John whisky, made by John Distilleries in Goa, India, is often overlooked next to its more internationally famous compatriot Amrut, but Bold — a fully peated expression added to the core range in 2015 — is a serious whisky in its own right. It is made entirely from Indian 6-row malted barley, smoked with Islay peat imported to Goa and used to dry the grain to around 25 PPM, then distilled in traditional copper pot stills and matured in charred American oak casks. The nose is multi-layered, offering deep peat, dates, bananas, chocolate, wild berries, and sandalwood, while the palate turns savoury and full-bodied with smoke, tobacco, allspice, cinnamon, bitter chocolate, and a touch of brine. India's tropical climate pushes maturation at an accelerated rate much like at Amrut, meaning Bold develops a complexity that belies its relatively short time in wood. For those who find Amrut's peated expression too restrained, Paul John Bold turns the dial up considerably. Buy it now!

Kings County Peated Bourbon: Brooklyn's Smoky Experiment

Kings County Distillery, based in Brooklyn, New York, occupies the oldest continuously operating distillery premises in New York City and has built a reputation for thoughtful, grain-forward whiskeys — and the Peated Bourbon is its most unconventional offering. It satisfies all legal bourbon requirements with a mashbill of 75% organic corn and 25% peated barley sourced from Thomas Fawcett in the UK, peated with Aberdeen peat to around 15 PPM, and aged for four years in new charred oak barrels. That relatively low PPM means the smoke integrates as a supporting character rather than dominating, weaving through tasting notes of wood embers, vanilla, toasted cinnamon, dark fruit, coffee cake, and chocolate. The concept of a peated bourbon is unusual — peat rarely features in American whiskey production partly due to federal wetland protection laws — making Kings County's willingness to experiment all the more notable. The result is a whiskey that sits genuinely between two traditions without feeling like a gimmick. Buy it now!

Kyrö Peat Smoke: Finland's Freshwater Peat Rye

Kyrö Distillery Company, based in Isokyrö in the Ostrobothnia region of Finland, produces what is one of the most genuinely distinctive peated whiskies in the world — not just because it uses rye instead of barley, but because the smoke comes from Finnish freshwater peat, which has a markedly different flavour profile from the coastal, mineral-heavy peat of Islay. The malted rye is grown and processed in Finland, then smoked with this freshwater peat for 24 hours, giving the spirit an aromatic, earthier quality rather than the iodine and sea-salt notes typical of Scottish peated expressions. Whisky Advocate's blind-tasting panel described the result as offering "a proper fug of aromatic peat smoke" mingling with rye spices and dark chocolate. Maturation takes place in a combination of new American oak, ex-bourbon, and ex-Kyrö Malt barrels, with the proportions varying by batch, bottled at 47.2% ABV. This is one of the most compelling arguments that peat is a regional ingredient as much as a technique, capable of expressing entirely different terroir depending on where in the world it is dug.
