Whiskeys You Can Drink in the Hot Tub

Hot Tub, Warm Water, Cold Glass — The Perfect Pairing

Not every whiskey is built for quiet contemplation in a leather armchair. Some bottles are made for exactly the opposite: steam rising off the water, good company, and zero pretension. The hot tub calls for whiskeys and whiskey drinks that are smooth, approachable, and easy to sip without demanding your full analytical attention. That means lower-proof options, light highballs, refreshing cocktails, and bottles that lean sweet, fruity, or gently spiced rather than heavily peated or tannic. Whether you're floating a tumbler on a pool tray or nursing a canned cocktail at the jets, these are the whiskeys that belong in the hot tub rotation.

Suntory Toki: Japan's Most Effortless Hot Tub Pour

Suntory Toki is a blended Japanese whisky made from stocks at Hakushu, Yamazaki, and Chita distilleries, bottled at a relaxed 43% ABV. It's built from the ground up to be a highball whisky — light, clean, and refreshing when mixed with cold sparkling water over ice. Tasting notes lean toward green apple, honey, and a soft vanilla finish with just a whisper of mint from Hakushu's high-altitude character. At this price point (typically around $30–$35), there's no anxiety about using it liberally with ice or soda, which makes it perfect for the hot tub. Serve it tall in a chilled glass with a good pour of chilled club soda and a lemon twist. Buy it now!

Whiskey Lemonade: The Hot Tub Classic That Never Fails

Whiskey lemonade is arguably the most hot-tub-appropriate whiskey drink in existence — it's cooling, citrus-forward, and simple enough to batch-make before you climb in. The classic ratio is two ounces of bourbon, three to four ounces of fresh-squeezed lemonade, and a splash of soda water over ice in a shaker pint or mason jar. Bourbons with a high corn content and natural sweetness, like Evan Williams White Label or Four Roses Yellow Label, work especially well because their vanilla and caramel notes play beautifully with tart lemon. A sprig of fresh mint or a few slices of strawberry takes the drink into full summer territory without adding any real effort. You can easily scale this to a pitcher for the whole hot tub crew.

High West American Prairie: Utah's Easygoing Crowd-Pleaser

High West Distillery out of Park City, Utah, blends sourced bourbons to create American Prairie — a smooth, accessible bourbon that has earned a loyal following for its gentle complexity and fair price. It delivers notes of sweet corn, toffee, light caramel, and a subtle hint of dried fruit, all at 46% ABV with no aggressive heat or bite. The finish is medium-length and soft, making it one of those rare bourbons that's just as satisfying neat as it is over a large cube or mixed simply with ginger ale. High West's commitment to the American Prairie Conservation effort gives the bottle some good-cause credibility as well. For hot tub purposes, it's an ideal pour — flavorful enough to reward attention, but breezy enough that you won't feel guilty if your focus drifts to the conversation. Buy it now!

Peach Whiskey Smash: Summer in a Glass

The Whiskey Smash is a classic cocktail — a close cousin of the Mint Julep — built on muddled fruit, fresh mint, and bourbon, and the peach variation is tailor-made for warm-weather soaking. To make it, muddle three or four fresh peach slices and a small handful of mint in the bottom of a shaker, add two ounces of wheated bourbon (Larceny or Maker's Mark both shine here), half an ounce of simple syrup, and the juice of half a lemon, then shake hard with ice. Strain over crushed ice in a rocks glass or a wide-mouthed cup and garnish with a peach slice and a mint sprig. The wheated bourbon's softness lets the peach and mint flavors take the lead, creating something that tastes like a Southern summer afternoon. It's vibrant, fragrant, and hits exactly the right note when you're soaking in warm water.

Garrison Brothers Honeydew: Texas Craft Done Sweet

Garrison Brothers is Texas's oldest legal bourbon distillery, and their Honeydew expression is a seasonal release that infuses their straight Texas bourbon with real honeydew melon — a natural fit for the hot tub context. The result is a whiskey that smells and tastes like ripe summer melon layered over Garrison's signature rich, oaky, and slightly spicy Texas-grown base. At around 47% ABV it retains enough backbone to remind you it's a serious bourbon, but the melon character softens the edges considerably. It's delicious on the rocks with just a splash of sparkling water, which stretches the melon notes beautifully without drowning them. Limited seasonal availability makes it a treat-yourself bottle rather than a daily driver, which fits the hot tub occasion perfectly. Buy it now!

Fireball & Apple Cider Highball: Guilty Pleasure, Zero Apologies

There's a reason Fireball Cinnamon Whisky is one of the best-selling spirits in the United States — it's sweet, warming, and completely unpretentious, all qualities that suit hot tub drinking perfectly. The Fireball and apple cider highball takes this a step further: combine one and a half ounces of Fireball with four ounces of cold sparkling apple cider over ice in a tall glass, and finish with a cinnamon stick. The cinnamon heat from the whisky meshes with the bright tartness of the cider in a way that's surprisingly balanced and incredibly refreshing. This is a drink that doesn't require any expertise to make or drink — batch it in a pitcher with sliced apples and cinnamon sticks for an easy hot tub setup. Whiskey purists may scoff, but in the hot tub, nobody cares.

WhistlePig PiggyBack: Craft Rye That Won't Keep You Tense

WhistlePig's PiggyBack 100% Rye is the Vermont distillery's most approachable and affordable bottle, designed to be the everyday rye you actually reach for instead of admiring from a shelf. Bottled at a friendly 96.56 proof (48.28% ABV), it delivers classic rye spice — black pepper, dill, toasted grain — along with surprising fruit notes of green apple and dried cherry that give it a lively, refreshing character. Unlike WhistlePig's more premium aged expressions, PiggyBack is priced around $40–$45 and intended for mixing, which makes it ideal for hot tub occasions where a bump here and a splash there feels consequence-free. It makes a brilliantly spiced Rye Highball with ginger beer and a lime wedge, a combination that tastes sharp and cooling even when the water around you is steaming. The PiggyBack label is also just fun — exactly the right energy. Buy it now!

Coconut Whiskey Colada: Tropics Meet Tennessee

The Coconut Whiskey Colada swaps rum for a light Tennessee or Kentucky whiskey in the classic Piña Colada framework, creating something that bridges the gap between tiki drink and Southern porch sipper. Blend two ounces of a smooth wheated bourbon like Heaven Hill's Larceny with one ounce of cream of coconut, two ounces of pineapple juice, and a cup of ice until smooth and frothy. The tropical fat of the coconut softens the bourbon's grain character and creates a thick, milkshake-like texture that's incredibly indulgent when you're soaking in a hot tub. Served in a plastic cup (glass near water is always a risk), topped with toasted coconut flakes and a pineapple wedge, it looks and tastes like a resort vacation. This is the kind of drink that makes people ask for the recipe.

Dewar's 12 Year: The Reliable Scotch for Stress-Free Sipping

Dewar's 12 Year Blended Scotch Whisky is one of the most widely available and consistently enjoyable Scotch blends on the market, and its light, honey-led character makes it an excellent choice for warm-weather, low-intensity sipping. It's double-aged through Dewar's signature Married in Oak process — the blended whisky is returned to cask after blending to smooth and integrate the flavors — resulting in a remarkably soft and harmonious dram. Notes of honey, vanilla, dried apricot, and a mild toasty oak finish make it easy to enjoy over a single large ice cube or in a light Scotch and soda. At around 40% ABV and a price hovering near $35, it's the kind of bottle you can open without any ceremony, which is exactly the vibe. No smoke, no peat, no drama — just smooth, dependable Scotch that asks nothing of you. Buy it now!

Breckenridge Bourbon: High-Altitude Craft for the Soak Session

Breckenridge Distillery sits at over 9,000 feet in the Colorado Rockies, and the high-altitude environment — with its extreme temperature swings — accelerates spirit-wood interaction in the barrels, producing a rich, full-flavored bourbon in a shorter maturation window. The flagship Breckenridge Bourbon blends straight bourbons from Indiana and Kentucky with their own Colorado-distilled high-rye spirit, resulting in a profile that leads with toffee, vanilla, dark cherry, and a pleasant baking spice finish. At 43% ABV it's easy drinking but fully formed — no roughness, no ethanol bite, just a well-rounded pour that works equally well neat or over ice. It's widely available at around $35–$40, which puts it in the guilt-free zone for cocktail-building or casual outdoor pours. Think of it as the craft option for people who want something with a story without having to think too hard. Buy it now!

Kentucky Mule: The Hot Tub's Most Refreshing Whiskey Cocktail

The Kentucky Mule is the bourbon riff on the classic Moscow Mule, and it might be the single most refreshing whiskey cocktail ever devised — exactly why it belongs in the hot tub. The recipe is simple: two ounces of bourbon, four to five ounces of quality ginger beer (Fever-Tree or Gosling's both work beautifully), and a generous squeeze of fresh lime juice, served over ice in a copper mug or a tall cup. The carbonation and aggressive ginger spice cut right through the heat — both the ambient temperature of the water and the warmth of the bourbon — creating a drink that refreshes even as it delivers alcohol. Any mid-shelf bourbon works well here, from Bulleit to Buffalo Trace to Four Roses Small Batch, though a slightly higher-rye mash bill adds a complementary spice that echoes the ginger. Batch the bourbon and lime juice ahead of time and top with ginger beer on demand for a seamless hot tub setup.
