What Whiskey to Buy When the Store Is Out of Your Go-To

When Your Usual Bottle Isn't There, the Real Fun Begins

Whiskey drinkers have never had it easy when it comes to allocated releases, supply shortages, and regional distribution gaps. Whether your go-to is perpetually out of stock, snatched up before you arrive, or simply limited to certain markets, an empty shelf doesn't have to end your evening. The whiskey world is deep and varied enough that for nearly every beloved bottle, there's a credible stand-in — one that shares a flavor profile, a production method, or a spirit of the same style. This guide is organized by the bottle you can't find, with smart alternatives across mainstream and craft producers that cover wheated bourbons, single-barrel picks, rye whiskeys, Irish expressions, and more. Think of it as your store-side decision tree for when the shelf refuses to cooperate.

W.L. Weller Special Reserve: The Wheater Everyone Actually Finds

When Pappy Van Winkle is nowhere to be seen, W.L. Weller Special Reserve is the most logical first stop. Weller is produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery and shares the same wheated bourbon mash bill as the entire Pappy Van Winkle lineup, meaning wheat replaces rye as the secondary grain, yielding that signature soft, sweet, and fruity character. At around $30–$40 at retail, it delivers the Buffalo Trace wheated DNA at a fraction of the price of allocated releases. The Special Reserve bottling sits at 90 proof and offers notes of caramel, dried fruit, and light vanilla — approachable enough for newcomers but satisfying for experienced sippers. It can be elusive in its own right, but it appears on shelves far more regularly than anything bearing the Van Winkle name. Buy it now!

Larceny Barrel Proof: Heaven Hill's Answer to the Wheated Shortage

Larceny Barrel Proof is one of the most compelling craft-adjacent options for fans of wheated bourbon who can't find Weller or Pappy. Produced by Heaven Hill, it draws on a lineage connected to Old Fitzgerald, which was once made at Stitzel-Weller — the same distillery where Julian Van Winkle Sr. himself worked. The bourbon blends six- to eight-year-old wheated barrels, bottled uncut and unfiltered at barrel proof, which typically lands between 118 and 124 proof depending on the batch. That unchecked strength delivers a rich, punchy pour dripping with caramel, dark molasses, and toasty oak that punches well beyond its age. Released three times per year in batches labeled A, B, and C, it's genuinely one of the best values in high-proof American whiskey. Buy it now!

Old Forester 1920: Bold Enough to Stand In for Almost Anything

Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style is the most powerful expression in Brown-Forman's Whiskey Row series, named for the year Prohibition took full effect and styled after the medicinal-grade whiskey the distillery legally produced throughout that era. It's built on Old Forester's high-rye mash bill — a formula that has remained unchanged since 1870 — and bottled at a robust 115 proof after extended aging that gives the bourbon a deep, almost port-like richness. Expect bold dark fruit, chocolate fudge, vanilla cream, and a lingering spice finish that earns every bit of that proof statement. It routinely runs around $60 at retail, making it a strong value against allocated bottles that command two or three times that on the secondary market. For fans of high-proof, complex bourbons who keep striking out at the shelf, this is a reliable and genuinely impressive substitute. Buy it now!

Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve: When Booker's Is Off the Shelf

Booker's Bourbon carries a devoted fanbase drawn to its raw, uncut power and big, barrel-forward flavor — but when it's gone or priced beyond reason, Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve fills the gap convincingly. Both are Jim Beam products, but the Single Barrel Reserve offers a store-pick option where retailers select individual barrels, giving each bottle a slightly unique personality and a direct connection to a single cask. The juice comes in at 120 proof and is aged nine years, delivering a concentrated hit of caramel, dark oak, roasted grain, and dried fruit with a long, warming finish. Unlike Booker's, which is released in small batches with varying proof levels that can complicate comparisons, Knob Creek Single Barrel keeps things consistent in character if not in precise flavor. It's widely available, reasonably priced, and performs exceptionally well both neat and in a low-dilution cocktail. Buy it now!

Evan Williams Single Barrel: The Most Underrated Substitute on the Shelf

Evan Williams Single Barrel is widely regarded as one of the best-value single-barrel bourbons in America, sitting at roughly $35 and consistently outperforming bottles that cost twice as much in blind tastings. Each bottle is vintage-dated, carries an individual barrel and bottling date, and comes from Heaven Hill's extensive rickhouse inventory, which means real age and real character behind a modest price tag. The palate is full and warming with dark fruit, butterscotch, and oak, making it a natural substitute for fans of Blanton's who can't find it at retail pricing. It lacks the silky mouthfeel of Blanton's and arrives at 86.6 proof rather than 93, giving it a slightly lighter body — but what it sacrifices in texture it compensates for in flavor complexity per dollar spent. For shoppers hitting empty shelves where allocated single-barrel bourbons once sat, this bottle deserves far more attention than it typically receives. Buy it now!

Benchmark Single Barrel: Buffalo Trace DNA at a Budget Price

When Blanton's is out and the secondary market prices are insulting, Benchmark Single Barrel offers a genuine Buffalo Trace connection at a price that rarely exceeds $25. It is pulled from the same Buffalo Trace Mash Bill #2 as Blanton's, meaning the underlying flavor architecture — high-rye grain content, warehouse maturation, and the distinctive Buffalo Trace house character — is directly related. The differences come down to barrel selection rigor, average age, and proof, but the shared DNA makes the comparison meaningful rather than a stretch. Expect a lighter, less intense expression than Blanton's, with notes of vanilla, caramel, and light spice that make it a perfectly capable sipper and a great cocktail base. It's an honest, no-frills bottle that delivers above its price point and keeps Buffalo Trace accessible when the allocated lineup is locked away. Buy it now!

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye: Barrel Proof Spice for WhistlePig Fans

WhistlePig 10 Year is considered a benchmark rye — age-stated, refined, and priced accordingly — but Wild Turkey's Rare Breed Rye is a barrel-proof alternative that delivers serious heat and complexity for considerably less money. Wild Turkey has been distilling rye for decades, and the Rare Breed expression takes that long heritage and bottles it without dilution, typically coming in between 112 and 116.8 proof depending on the batch. The flavor profile leads with classic rye spice — black pepper, dried orange peel, and toasted wood — layered over a foundation of caramel and vanilla that keeps it from becoming one-dimensional. It's versatile enough to open up with a splash of water for a more nuanced sip, or to stand firm in a rye Manhattan or Sazerac. For rye drinkers who associate quality with proof and age, this bottle demands serious consideration whenever the Vermont farmhouse bottle is missing from the shelf. Buy it now!

Distillery 291 Colorado Rye: The Craft Rye Worth Crossing Town For

Distillery 291 in Colorado Springs is one of the most distinctive craft rye producers in America, and its Colorado Rye is a bottle that serious whiskey drinkers should be seeking out regardless of what's missing from the mainstream shelf. The distillery finishes its rye with toasted Aspen wood staves, a regional twist that imparts an extra dimension of flavor — light smoke, a faint earthiness, and a subtle sweetness that you won't find in Kentucky-style ryes. Founded by former fashion photographer Michael Myers, the distillery has earned medals at the American Distilling Institute and the Denver International Spirits Competition for its innovative approach to American grain whiskey. The rye grain bill is aggressive enough to deliver real spice and herbal character, while the Aspen stave finishing softens the edges and adds complexity. It's genuinely limited in distribution, so if you spot it in the wild, it's worth picking up two bottles.

Redbreast 12 Year: The Irish Standby That Actually Stands Alone

If your usual Jameson or Bushmills is cleaned out and you're open to stepping up in quality, Redbreast 12 Year is one of the most satisfying upgrades available in Irish whiskey. It's a single pot still expression — a style unique to Ireland — which by law must contain at least 30 percent unmalted barley alongside the malted grain, distilled in copper pot stills, producing a distinctively creamy, spicy mouthfeel that blended Irish whiskeys simply can't replicate. Redbreast 12 is matured in a combination of American bourbon barrels and Spanish Oloroso sherry butts, contributing notes of toasted wood, orchard fruit, spice, and a long, warming finish. It has been in production in some form for over 100 years and represents excellent value in the single pot still category at around $50–$60 a bottle. It works beautifully neat, on ice, or in a hot whiskey — and once you've tried it, returning to the entry-level blends feels like a step in the wrong direction. Buy it now!

Yellow Spot: When Redbreast Is Gone and You Want Something Special

Yellow Spot is produced by the Irish Distillers group at Midleton Distillery and sits in the distinguished Spot Whiskey range, a family of single pot still Irish whiskeys that traces its commercial roots back to Dublin wine merchants Mitchell & Son. Aged for a minimum of 12 years in a combination of American bourbon barrels, Spanish Malaga casks, and Spanish Sherry butts, it arrives at 46 percent ABV — high enough to carry real weight but approachable enough for everyday sipping. The flavor profile is defined by its fruit-forward character: sweet strawberry, ripe plum, and creamy hot chocolate layer over a classic pot still spice backbone. It's bottled without chill-filtration, preserving the natural oils and texture that contribute to its exceptional mouthfeel. For drinkers who love Redbreast but find the shelves bare, Yellow Spot represents a lateral move into equally prestigious territory. Buy it now!

Michter's Single Barrel Rye: Lower Proof, Higher Character

Michter's US*1 Single Barrel Straight Rye is an outlier in the modern rye category because it comes in at just 84.8 proof — significantly lower than most of its high-octane competition — yet manages to deliver genuine complexity and nuance that earns it a devoted following. The brand's rye recipe traces its lineage back to 1753 in Pennsylvania, though the current operation distills out of its Shively, Kentucky facility, with single-barrel selection ensuring that each bottling has its own personality. Expect notes of toffee, apple, warm baking spice, and a subtle vanilla sweetness that makes it one of the most cocktail-friendly ryes on the market — particularly in a Whiskey Sour or an Old Fashioned where a lower proof won't overwhelm other ingredients. It retails around $45–$50 and is broadly available at specialty retailers, making it a strong pick when WhistlePig or other premium ryes are sold out. The lower proof is a feature, not a flaw — it makes this rye one of the most versatile bottles you can keep on the home bar. Buy it now!

New Riff Bottled-in-Bond: The Craft Bourbon That Keeps Delivering

New Riff Distilling in Newport, Kentucky has built a reputation for producing genuinely excellent whiskey at a price that keeps pace with quality rather than hype, and its Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon is the flagship expression that proves the point. Bottled-in-bond status requires the whiskey to be the product of one distillery, one distiller, one season, aged a minimum of four years in a federally bonded warehouse, and bottled at exactly 100 proof — a set of legal standards that historically served as America's first consumer protection law for spirits. The mashbill is high-rye at around 65 percent corn and 30 percent rye, giving it a bolder, more assertive flavor profile than many Kentucky peers — bright grain notes, a range of fresh fruit, and a rich, full mouthfeel. It doesn't carry the age depth of a 9- or 12-year expression, but the freshness and vibrancy make it a compelling alternative to Knob Creek or similarly priced small-batch bourbons. For drinkers who want to support independent distilling while still drinking great whiskey, New Riff is one of the most consistent craft picks in the country. Buy it now!

Angel's Envy: The Port-Finished Crowd-Pleaser for the Open-Minded Shopper

Angel's Envy occupies a clever middle ground in the American whiskey market — it starts as a traditional Kentucky straight bourbon but finishes in Ruby Port wine barrels for up to six months before bottling, which sets it apart from virtually everything else on a standard retail shelf. That port finishing adds a layer of dried fruit sweetness, faint berry notes, and a subtle wine-like richness that softens the bourbon's natural caramel and vanilla base into something distinctly approachable. It comes in at 86.6 proof, making it an easy pour for guests who find higher-proof bourbons intimidating, and it regularly carries notes of caramel, dried apricot, and light spice on the finish. Founded by the late master distiller Lincoln Henderson — the man behind Woodford Reserve and Gentleman Jack — Angel's Envy carries serious craft credibility behind its polished label. When Blanton's is unavailable and a drinker wants the same sweet, honey-kissed approachability, Angel's Envy is a natural recommendation that tends to convert skeptics on the first sip. Buy it now!
