The Best Bourbons to Stock If You Only Have Room for Eight Bottles

The Best Bourbons to Stock If You Only Have Room for Eight Bottles

Building a thoughtful bourbon shelf is less about quantity and more about covering the right ground. Whether you're working with a single cabinet, a modest bar cart, or just limited budget and space, the goal is the same: a range of bottles that can handle any occasion — a slow sipping night, a spirited cocktail, or an impromptu tasting with friends. Bourbon's diversity is one of its greatest strengths, spanning everything from high-rye spice and wheated softness to barrel-proof intensity and approachable everyday drinkers. A well-rounded selection should cover different mash bills, proof points, and price tiers so you're never reaching for the wrong tool. Knowing what each bottle brings to the table — and where the gaps in your lineup might be — is the real foundation of a smart, satisfying collection.

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof

Heaven Hill's Elijah Craig Barrel Proof is a classic powerhouse that drops new batches regularly, often clocking in over 120 proof. You get intense caramel, oak, and baking spices that hit hard but balance out nicely as it opens up. It's the kind of bourbon that rewards a slow pour neat or with a drop of water if the proof feels too rowdy – perfect for kicking back and letting the flavors unfold. Buy it now!

Four Roses Single Barrel

Single barrel bourbons inherently exhibit flavor variations based on their cask of origin. However, this characteristic adds to the pleasure of enjoying whiskey sourced from an individual barrel rather than a blend from multiple casks. Kentucky's Four Roses distinguishes itself by crafting ten different recipes utilizing two mashbills and five yeast strains. The single barrel release highlights a chosen recipe, typically aged for seven to nine years, and is bottled at 100 proof. This bourbon consistently delivers excellence, regardless of the specific barrel selected. Buy it now!

Michter's has a reputation for quality, and their US*1 bourbon lives up to the hype. This is small batch bourbon that's been carefully crafted to maximize smoothness and flavor. You get rich notes of caramel, dried fruit, vanilla, and a touch of spice that's perfectly balanced. What makes it special is the toasted barrel finish - they heat the barrels to a specific char level that brings out sweetness and reduces harshness. At 91.4 proof, it hits that sweet spot where you get full flavor without any bite. It's smooth enough for newcomers but complex enough that bourbon veterans will find plenty to appreciate. The only downside is that it's getting harder to find as word spreads.
