The Best Bourbons for a Fall Tailgate

Bourbon Season Has Arrived — and So Has Game Day

Fall tailgating and bourbon were made for each other. The season's cool air, smoky grills, and electric pre-game energy call for a spirit with warmth, depth, and crowd-pleasing character. Whether you're nursing a pour neat while the coals heat up or mixing something quick for the crew, bourbon fits every corner of the tailgate spread. The bottles in this gallery span budget-friendly crowd-pleasers to artisan craft releases worth seeking out — something for every cooler, every folding table, and every fan. From Kentucky limestone water classics to trail-blazing Texas distilleries, fall has never tasted this good.

Wild Turkey 101: The Tailgate Workhorse

Few bourbons punch as far above their price tag as Wild Turkey 101, making it a go-to for game-day gatherings. It's distilled from a mash bill of 75% corn, 13% rye, and 12% malted barley, then matured using a blend of 6, 7, and 8-year barrels before being bottled at 101 proof. On the nose you get sweet caramel, nutmeg, and cinnamon, while the palate delivers a spicy kick of rye, dry oak, pepper, vanilla, and toffee. The baking spice finish lingers well past the final sip, which makes it a serious sipper or a bone-fide cocktail base. At around $25 a bottle, it's one of the most reliable and affordable picks you can bring to the parking lot. Buy it now!

Elijah Craig Small Batch: The Undisputed Value King

Produced at Heaven Hill's Kentucky distillery, Elijah Craig Small Batch is the bourbon that introduced countless enthusiasts to the category — and it still earns its shelf space today. Bottled at 94 proof, it's aged in Level 3 charred new oak barrels, which release caramelized sugars, vanillin, wood smoke, and spice into the liquid. Tasting notes include honey, marzipan, warm vanilla, and a drying oak finish that shows genuine depth for the price point. The nicely layered finish fades slowly, giving you plenty of time to savor every note between bites of brisket. At roughly $30, it remains one of the best value bourbons on shelves anywhere. Knob Creek Small Batch: Big Flavor for Big Crowds

Knob Creek is the go-to for tailgaters who want something more assertive than an everyday shelf pour without venturing into rare-bottle territory. Part of Jim Beam's small batch collection, it's bottled at 100 proof and aged a full nine years, giving it a robust richness that sets it apart from lighter mainstream options. It leans punchier than something like Woodford Reserve while delivering the same kind of rich, full-bodied flavor that serious bourbon drinkers appreciate. Expect dense caramel, toasted oak, vanilla, and a long spiced finish that stands up beautifully to tailgate food like pulled pork and chili. It's the kind of bottle that quietly converts casual drinkers into bourbon fans between the first and second quarter. Buy it now!

Four Roses Small Batch: The Nuanced Crowd-Pleaser

Four Roses takes a unique approach to blending by combining multiple proprietary mash bills and yeast strains, and Small Batch is where that philosophy really shines for everyday drinking. The result is an elegant spice that comes from Four Roses' distinct multi-mashbill process, layering complexity you wouldn't expect at this price point. The nose opens with stone fruit and floral notes before moving into a palate of ripe berries, caramel, and gentle baking spice. It goes beyond the classical sweet and earthy notes most casual bourbon drinkers are accustomed to, making it an excellent conversation starter around the tailgate. Priced in the mid-$30 range and widely available, it's an easy bottle to grab on the way to the lot. Buy it now!

Buffalo Trace: The Tailgate Staple Everyone Recognizes

Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon is one of the most recognized bottles in American whiskey, and for good reason — it consistently delivers a well-balanced, approachable profile that earns fans across experience levels. Distilled at the historic Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, one of the oldest continuously operating distilleries in the country, it comes in at 90 proof and carries aromas of vanilla, mint, and molasses. The palate adds brown sugar and anise before a long, smooth finish with oak and spice. It mixes easily into a Bourbon Smash or Whiskey Sour without sacrificing character, yet holds its own neat in a cold parking lot. At around $30, it's one of the most reliable bottles to set on a tailgate table. Buy it now!

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked: Autumn in a Bottle

If one bourbon was purpose-built for fall, it might be Woodford Reserve Double Oaked, a release that goes through a second maturation period in heavily toasted, freshly charred barrels. That extra time in wood amplifies sweet notes of vanilla, honey, and butterscotch into something that practically smells like a candied pecan stand at a fall festival. The texture is notably richer and more rounded than the standard Woodford expression, with deep dried fruit and dark caramel flavors filling out a velvety palate. It's an ideal sipping bourbon for the early evening tailgate when the temperature starts to drop and the crowd mellows before kickoff. Priced around $50, it rewards those who bring something a little extra to the party. Buy it now!

Larceny Barrel Proof: The Wheater That Hits Hard

Heaven Hill's Larceny Barrel Proof releases come in batches three times a year, and the final batch of 2024 was widely considered its best yet by reviewers who follow the series closely. As a wheated bourbon, Larceny swaps rye for wheat in the mash bill, which softens the spice and accentuates sweetness — but at barrel proof (typically in the 120s range), there's still plenty of heat to let you know you're drinking something serious. The nose delivers brown sugar, butterscotch, and a hint of coconut, while the palate opens into caramel, fresh bread, and a warm, long finish. It's the kind of bottle that earns real respect when you pull it out of the cooler, and it sips better with just a few drops of water or a single cube of ice. Expect to pay around $50–$60 when you can find it. Buy it now!

George T. Stagg: The Trophy Bottle of Fall

George T. Stagg is one of the most anticipated annual releases in American whiskey, dropping as part of Buffalo Trace's fall Antique Collection each year. The 2023 release came in at a staggering 135 proof over 15 years of aging — a bottle that's genuinely built for the fall season. Tasting notes include cherry, red hots, sugar, citrus, and blackberry parfait, delivering a complexity that rewards slow sipping over the course of a long game-day afternoon. It's the bourbon you bring to a tailgate only when you trust the company, and it tends to make any gathering feel like a special occasion. Its annual scarcity means hunting one down is part of the ritual — and landing a bottle feels like its own kind of victory. Buy it now!

Still Austin The Artist: Texas Craft Built for the Outdoors

Founded in 2015 in Austin, Texas, Still Austin Whiskey Co. runs a genuine grain-to-glass operation — growing, milling, fermenting, distilling, and barreling everything in-house. The Artist, their flagship straight bourbon, uses a mash bill built around Texas-grown Elbon rye, which delivers extremely rich rye spice, baking spice, and cinnamon-nutmeg notes that are more prominent than comparable bourbons with similar rye percentages. The sweetness lands as brown sugar cinnamon toast with caramel and vanilla, and the non-chill filtering creates an oily, full mouthfeel that amplifies the finish. That bold, herbal Texas character makes it an exceptional pour for outdoor settings where subtlety isn't the priority. It's the craft pick that earns the loudest reaction when someone reads the label and realizes it came from Austin. Buy it now!

Breckenridge Port Cask Finish: High-Altitude Flavor Worth Passing Around

Breckenridge Distillery, based in the Colorado Rockies, took home World's Best Finished Bourbon and America's Best Finished Bourbon at the 2024 World Whiskies Awards — a remarkable achievement for a craft operation at elevation. Their Port Cask Finish Bourbon starts as a high-rye mash bill whiskey and finishes in ruby port wine barrels, adding layers of dark fruit, dried cherry, and a subtle sweetness that works beautifully against the spirit's spiced backbone. The result is a complex, approachable bottle that will intrigue both bourbon purists and those who usually prefer something a little sweeter. It was first released in 2016 and has been earning consistent global recognition since, winning Best American Blended Whiskey at the World Whiskies Awards as far back as 2017. For a tailgate, it's the wild card that no one saw coming and everyone keeps reaching for. Buy it now!

Woodinville 8 Year: The Pacific Northwest Sleeper Hit

Located in a northeast suburb of Seattle, Woodinville Whiskey Company has been making whiskey since 2010, but its 8-year straight bourbon caught the wider industry off guard in 2024, earning best-of-year recognition from multiple publications. The distillery's approach focuses on barrel science — exploring varying char levels, barrel drying techniques including kiln versus open-air seasoning, and gas chromatography analysis to zero in on the exact flavor compounds the founders were targeting. The extra age and technical precision pay off in a palate that features notable roasted flavors, ample spice, marzipan, leather, and a lingering nuttiness that sets it apart from Kentucky benchmarks. It's the kind of bottle you pull out to settle the debate about whether great bourbon can come from outside the Bluegrass State. Bringing one to a tailgate earns you serious credibility with the bourbon crowd. Buy it now!

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof: The Serious Sipper's Game-Day Choice

The Elijah Craig Barrel Proof series releases three batches per year, and each one arrives uncut and unfiltered straight from the barrel, making every batch a one-of-a-kind experience. The A124 release was awarded Double Gold at the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and came in at a modest 119 proof — the second-lowest proof small batch barrel proof Elijah Craig had ever released, which made it remarkably drinkable for the proof level. Tasting notes from that batch include rich caramel, toasted oak, and a hint of dark chocolate that plays brilliantly against fall tailgate fare like smoked brisket or spiced nuts. What it might lack in brute-force intensity it more than compensates for in nuance and complexity, rewarding those who take their time between sips. It's the bottle that turns the tailgate into a proper tasting — and nobody is complaining. Buy it now!
