Honey Whiskeys That Bring the Sweetness

The Sweet Side of Whiskey: Why Honey Works

Honey whiskey sits at a compelling crossroads between tradition and approachability, appealing to seasoned drinkers and newcomers alike. The honey adds a touch of natural sweetness that balances the whiskey's characteristic spice and oak flavors, without erasing the spirit's identity. Makers take wildly different approaches — some infuse honey directly into the whiskey, others finish their bourbon in barrels that previously held estate-harvested honey, and a few do both. The result is a category that ranges from ultra-smooth crowd-pleasers to serious, layered expressions worth sipping slowly. What unites them all is that honeyed warmth that makes every pour feel a little more inviting.

Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey: The Category Kingmaker

When Jack Daniel's launched Tennessee Honey in 2011, it took the iconic No. 7 Tennessee whiskey and blended it with a honey liqueur, creating one of the most recognizable expressions in the category. The National Honey Board named it one of the smoothest honey whiskeys on the market, with judges praising its subtle yet enticing floral nose. On the palate, it delivers familiar Jack Daniel's smokiness alongside mellow fruit, hints of cherry, and a honey sweetness that comes through clearly without overwhelming the whiskey character. At 70 proof, it's designed to be approachable — equally at home sipped neat, over ice, or stirred into a simple cocktail. Its global reach and consistent quality have made it the entry point through which millions of drinkers discovered honey whiskey. Buy it now!

Starlight Honey Reserve: Farm-to-Barrel Indiana Craft

Starlight Distillery sits on the Huber family's 700-plus-acre estate in Borden, Indiana — a seventh-generation farm that grows its own grains, operates its own beehives, and distills everything on a Vendome copper pot still. The Honey Reserve blends 5-to-7-year-old bourbons from two separate mashbills — one corn-rye-barley, one four-grain with wheat — before finishing the spirit for four to twelve months in fire-charred and toasted casks that previously held the farm's own estate-harvested honey. The hives are pollinated by orchard fruits and wildflowers surrounding the estate, giving the honey — and in turn the whiskey — a distinctive floral and fruit-driven character. On the nose, delicate orchard fruit rises above vanilla and toasted oak, while the palate delivers golden apple, warm baking spice, and a long honeyed finish. Bottled at 106 proof and priced around $65, it's a legitimately farm-to-bottle craft release that critics have called one of the best honey-finished bourbons available. Buy it now!

Hochstadter's Slow & Low: The National Honey Board's Best

In a 2024 blind tasting hosted by the National Honey Board in Louisville, Kentucky, Hochstadter's Slow & Low Rock & Rye from Cooper Spirits Company took the top spot for Best Honey Whiskey in the United States. This 84-proof spirit is built on a straight rye whiskey base and enriched with the addition of rock candy, honey, aromatic bitters, and navel oranges — a recipe rooted in the classic 19th-century American Rock & Rye tradition. Judges praised it from its citrus-forward nose through to its subtly sweet honey-driven palate, singling out its balance as the decisive factor. The combination of rye's natural spice and the layered sweetness of honey and citrus creates a spirit that feels both historically grounded and endlessly drinkable. It's widely available and priced accessibly, making it an easy recommendation for anyone curious about honey whiskey's more complex side. Buy it now!

Garrison Brothers HoneyDew: Texas Wildflower in a Bottle

Texas-based Garrison Brothers took a distinctly hands-on approach to crafting their HoneyDew — rather than simply adding honey to finished whiskey, the distillery creates cubes from used bourbon barrels, soaks them in Burleson's local organic Texas wildflower honey, and then steeps those cubes for seven months in stainless-steel tanks filled with Garrison Brothers Small Batch bourbon. This method allows the honey character to integrate gradually and deeply without turning the whiskey into a liqueur. The nose arrives with freshly sawn wood, floral notes, toffee, and honeydew melon, and the texture is remarkably soft and creamy on the palate. Notes of grilled pineapple, vanilla, milk chocolate, and mild oak build across the sip, with a finish of honeysuckle and angel food cake. Bottled at 80 proof, HoneyDew captures the rugged elegance of the Texas Hill Country while delivering one of the more nuanced honey expressions from a craft distillery. Buy it now!

Blue Note Honey Cask: Memphis Muscle at Cask Strength

Blue Note Honey Cask Bourbon from B.R. Distilling in Memphis is where honey whiskey gets serious. Bottled at a commanding 115.7 proof and priced around $63, it's built on a straight bourbon base aged at least three years on a mash of 70% corn, 21% rye, and 9% malted barley. The nose lands somewhere between a cedar chest and a jar of wildflower honey — an unusual but captivating combination of cedar, walnut, and honeyed florals. On the palate, leather and ripe pear emerge alongside that honeyed sweetness, and the cask-strength heat integrates rather than overpowers. A warm wildflower note carries through the finish, earning this bottle a 94-point score from The Daily Pour Critics' Score. For drinkers who want their honey whiskey to have genuine backbone rather than sweetness alone, Blue Note Honey Cask is one of the most compelling options in the category.
