Grocery Store Bourbons That Are Secretly Great

The Best Bourbon in the Store Might Already Be in Your Cart

Bourbon culture has long been obsessed with allocated bottles locked behind glass and secondary-market prices that rival mortgage payments. But the grocery store bourbon aisle — often dismissed as the realm of mixers and bottom-shelf regrets — is quietly hiding some of the most honest, well-made whiskey in America. Distillers have been perfecting these everyday expressions for decades, and the consistent production scale that makes them affordable also makes them remarkably reliable pour after pour. The eleven bottles that follow span budget heroes and mid-shelf overachievers, mixing mainstream staples with a handful of craft releases that have quietly found their way onto grocery store shelves nationwide.

Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond: The $20 Benchmark Beater

Produced by Heaven Hill at their Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond carries the full weight of the Bottled-in-Bond Act behind it: one distillation season, one distillery, government-supervised aging, and bottled at exactly 100 proof. The mashbill runs 78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% malted barley, which delivers the classic Heaven Hill house character — malty, earthy sweetness anchored by vanilla, caramel, and a quiet brown sugar warmth. In a five-bottle blind tasting against Weller Special Reserve, Buffalo Trace, Benchmark Bonded, and Old Grand-Dad Bonded, it took the top spot. At around $20 to $22, it represents one of the most straightforward value plays in the entire bourbon category, equally capable as a sipper or a cocktail base. Buy it now!

Wild Turkey 101: The Rowdy Reputation Hides a Serious Whiskey

Wild Turkey 101 carries a party-school reputation that has unfairly obscured just how well-crafted this bourbon truly is. What sets Wild Turkey apart from most of its peers is their use of a Number 4 alligator char on every barrel — one level above the industry-standard Number 3 — which drives the deep vanilla, toasted oak, and wood-spice character the brand is known for. The nose opens with pecan, hazelnut, brown sugar, and a toasted orange note, while the palate delivers the bold, spice-forward profile that keeps serious enthusiasts coming back. At roughly $25 and available in virtually every grocery store in America, it routinely punches well above its price class and is considered by many enthusiasts to be one of the best everyday values in bourbon. Old Grand-Dad 114: High-Rye Heat at a Low-Shelf Price

Old Grand-Dad 114 is built around a distinctly spicy mashbill of 63% corn, 27% rye, and 10% malted barley — the same high-rye recipe shared with Basil Hayden, but bottled at a thundering 114 proof that gives it an entirely different personality. The nose leads with caramel, cherries, and baking spices before dry oak and a hot cinnamon toothpick quality take hold, with the palate following suit with dark fruit, sweet raisin, and cherry cola before a long, warming finish. The brand was created by Raymond B. Hayden in honor of his grandfather Meredith Basil Hayden Sr., a storied Kentucky distiller, and has been in production since 1882. Finding a full-flavored 114-proof bourbon for around $25 to $30 is genuinely rare, and fans have been quietly championing this bottle for years while the rest of the world chased allocated unicorns. Four Roses Yellow Label: Ten Recipes in One Underrated Bottle

Four Roses Yellow Label is one of the most technically complex bourbons at its price point, blended from all ten of the distillery's distinct recipes — combining two mash bills with five proprietary yeast strains — and aged for between five and a half and six years across no more than 200 casks. The Lawrenceburg, Kentucky distillery, now owned by Japan's Kirin Brewery, uses those multiple yeast strains to create signature flavor layers that most single-recipe distilleries simply cannot replicate at this price. On the palate, you'll find caramel, vanilla, honey-sweet spice, and a ginger-tinged dryness on the finish that makes it endlessly sessionable. Bourbon snobs sometimes dismiss it as the entry-level Four Roses, but enthusiasts consistently rank it among the best-value pours in the $25 to $30 range. Buy it now!

Maker's Mark: The Wheated Workhorse That Earns Its Place

Maker's Mark out of Loretto, Kentucky swaps the typical rye for 16% red winter wheat in its mash bill, giving it the softer, sweeter profile that defines the wheated bourbon style. The result is a glass full of mellow vanilla, caramel, toasted oak, baking spice, and a subtle maple syrup sweetness that makes it one of the most approachable bourbons on any shelf. Every bottle is individually hand-dipped in red wax at the distillery, so no two look exactly the same — a small craft touch that has somehow survived at industrial scale. At 90 proof and widely available in grocery stores from coast to coast, it remains one of the most consistent bottles in American whiskey and one that deserves more credit than its mainstream ubiquity typically earns it. Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond 7-Year: Heaven Hill's Unsung Statement Bottle

Rebranded and relaunched in 2022, Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond 7-Year is the distillery's flagship BiB expression and a significant step up from the Evan Williams version made with the same 78% corn, 10% rye, 12% malted barley mash bill. The extra years in the barrel fill the nose with a distinctly earthy and nutty character — walnuts, potting soil, and brown sugar melding with warm vanilla pods — before the palate opens into cinnamon bark, nutmeg, and oak. At around $30 to $35 and still findable at many grocery stores with a decent spirits section, it delivers a bottled-in-bond quality guarantee alongside a seven-year age statement that would cost considerably more under a different label. Whiskey enthusiasts who know their Heaven Hill portfolio rate this as one of the brand's most compelling everyday offerings.

1792 Small Batch: Barton's Quietly Impressive Everyday Pour

Produced at the historic Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky, 1792 Small Batch carries a higher rye content than most of its grocery-store neighbors, giving it a bold, slightly spicy character wrapped in a remarkably smooth delivery for its proof. The mash bill, though proprietary, is generally described as high-rye for the Barton house style, and the result is a bourbon that punches well above its roughly $30 price tag in terms of flavor complexity and finish length. The bottle design is sleek and modern — easy to overlook in favor of the flashier allocated labels nearby — but that first sip consistently surprises new drinkers expecting something ordinary. Both the standard Small Batch and the Bottled-in-Bond and Full Proof variants from the 1792 line offer impressive value, making Barton's portfolio one of the most underappreciated in the state. Benchmark Full Proof: Buffalo Trace Quality at Dollar-Store Pricing

Benchmark Full Proof is produced at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, using the same storied facilities responsible for Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, and Blanton's — yet it typically retails for around $23 to $25. It comes in at 125 proof, which means you're getting a full-throttle barrel-strength-style pour without the premium that normally accompanies that kind of heat. The flavor profile brings forward caramel, vanilla, dark fruit, and a solid backbone of oak char, with enough proof to ensure the bourbon doesn't disappear in cocktails or get lost under ice. For anyone hunting allocated Buffalo Trace expressions and coming up empty, Benchmark Full Proof is made a few floors away and offers a legitimately compelling experience at a fraction of the frustration. Woodford Reserve: The Mainstream Bottle That Actually Delivers

Woodford Reserve sits in a tricky middle ground — too expensive for the value crowd, too available for the snobs — but the triple-pot-still distillation process used at the Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles, Kentucky genuinely sets it apart from most of its shelf neighbors. The 90.4 proof bottling carries a complex mash bill that includes a notably high 18% rye content, contributing to the dried fruit, chocolate, mint, and floral notes that make it one of the more layered $35 to $40 bourbons you can find at a grocery store. It appears at bourbon bars and homes across the country because it consistently performs well neat, on the rocks, and in cocktails without demanding adjustments. While the Woodford Double Oaked and Master's Collection expressions get more press, the standard Woodford Reserve is a reliably excellent everyday bottle that earns its reputation honestly. Knob Creek 9-Year: Jim Beam's Most Overlooked Overachiever

Knob Creek 9-Year is part of Jim Beam's Small Batch Bourbon Collection alongside Basil Hayden, Baker's, and Booker's, but it's the one most likely to be sitting on a grocery store shelf with a reasonable price tag still attached — typically around $35 to $40. At 100 proof with a confirmed nine-year age statement, it delivers rich caramel, roasted nuts, vanilla, and a pronounced oak backbone that speaks to its extended time in barrel. The higher proof gives it the structure to carry significant flavor without going harsh, and the nine-year age offers a maturity that's genuinely rare at this price point. Freddie Noe, grandson of Booker Noe, has overseen the brand's direction, and the standard 9-Year remains one of the most dependable high-value pours in the Beam Suntory portfolio. Buy it now!

Very Old Barton 100: The $13 Floor Find That Routinely Embarrasses Pricier Bottles

Very Old Barton 100 is produced at the same Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown that makes the 1792 Small Batch line, and at around $13 for a 750ml bottle, it represents arguably the most extreme value play in American bourbon. Bottled at 100 proof, it hits the classic notes — fruit, vanilla, and caramel — without any of the rough edges or harshness you might expect at this price point, making it a reliable crowd-pleaser and a surprisingly capable sipper straight. It lives perpetually on the bottom shelf, which has unfortunately attached a stigma that its quality does absolutely nothing to deserve. Bartenders and seasoned enthusiasts who know their way around the Barton portfolio have long kept Very Old Barton on their radars as the kind of bottle you stock in bulk when you find it, because nothing else comes close to its proof-to-dollar ratio in the grocery store aisle.
