Bourbons Worth Trying if You Grew Up Thinking Whiskey Was for Old Men

Bourbon Has Changed — And So Has the Person Drinking It

For a long time, bourbon carried the image of a dusty bottle in a grandparent's cabinet — something brown, harsh, and decidedly not for you. That reputation no longer holds up. The past two decades have seen an explosion of distilleries, mash bill experiments, and finishing techniques that have made bourbon one of the most diverse and exciting spirit categories in the world. Today's bottles range from silky, fruit-forward wheated pours to sherry-cask-finished hybrids that taste closer to a dessert than a medicine cabinet. Whether you drink it neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail, there's a bourbon on the current market that was practically designed for the person who swore they didn't like whiskey.

Buffalo Trace: The Easiest First Step in Bourbon

Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon is one of the most consistently recommended entry points in the entire category, and it earns that reputation honestly. It comes out of the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky — a facility that has been operating since 1775 and is widely considered one of the most storied in American whiskey history. On the nose, it opens with sweet vanilla, caramel, and a hint of orange peel, while the palate adds notes of brown sugar, subtle fruit, and gentle oak. The finish is medium-long with lingering toffee and soft warmth — never aggressive, always inviting. At around $30 and 90 proof, it's the bottle that makes people realize they've been wrong about bourbon their entire lives. Buy it now!

Woodinville Straight Bourbon: Pacific Northwest Proof That Great Bourbon Isn't Just Kentucky

Woodinville Whiskey Co. sits in the Cascade foothills of Washington State, and its straight bourbon has become one of the most talked-about craft expressions outside of Kentucky — a significant feat in a category where geography has historically been everything. The bourbon uses 100% Washington-grown grain and benefits from a unique maturation arrangement: the barrels are aged in a purpose-built warehouse in Quincy, Washington, where dramatic temperature swings between hot summers and cold winters accelerate the interaction between wood and spirit. At around five years old, the result is a surprisingly developed bourbon with notes of caramel, vanilla, orchard fruit, and toasted oak that drink older than the age statement suggests. It's a genuinely craft-forward bottle that doesn't feel like it's trying to imitate Kentucky — it has its own Pacific Northwest identity that makes it stand out on any shelf. For drinkers who appreciate terroir in wine or coffee, this is the bourbon that asks the same questions. Buy it now!

Maker's Mark: Wheated, Sweet, and Nearly Impossible to Dislike

Maker's Mark is a wheated bourbon, meaning it swaps rye out of the mash bill in favour of red winter wheat — a decision that gives the spirit a noticeably softer, rounder, and sweeter character. The result is a profile built on dark caramel, vanilla, and warm baking spice, with none of the sharp rye bite that intimidates new bourbon drinkers. Bottled at 90 proof, it sits right in the sweet spot that experts routinely recommend for first-time palates. The hand-dipped red wax seal has become an icon, and the distillery in Loretto, Kentucky, runs one of the most visitor-friendly operations on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. If bourbon has ever tasted too harsh to you in the past, this is the bottle most likely to change your mind. Buy it now!

Old Forester 1910: Double-Barrel Depth for the Adventurous Beginner

Old Forester is one of the oldest continuously produced bourbon brands in the United States, and the 1910 expression — part of its Whisky Row Series — is arguably its most interesting bottle for newer drinkers with a curiosity for something beyond the standard. The 1910 is double-barrelled: first aged in the standard new charred oak, then finished in a second new barrel that is lightly charred rather than heavily charred, which rounds out the spice and amplifies notes of rich dark caramel, toasted oak, cocoa, and soft dried fruit. The result is a noticeably fuller and more dessert-driven experience than the brand's 86- or 100-proof expressions, without becoming aggressive or overly tannic. Bottled at 93 proof, it sits comfortably between an everyday pour and a special occasion bottle. If Old Forester 86 or 100 was your gateway, this is the natural next chapter. Buy it now!

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked: Rich and Celebratory

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked takes the already well-regarded Woodford bourbon and finishes it in a second, deeply toasted new oak barrel, amplifying the wood-driven flavors into something far richer than the standard release. The result is a bourbon loaded with chocolate, toasted vanilla, cinnamon, and a creamy, full-bodied mouthfeel that makes it an effortless sip even for guests who don't usually reach for bourbon. Produced at the historic Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles, Kentucky — a site with distilling roots dating back to 1812 — it carries genuine heritage alongside its polished flavor. Bottled at 43.2% ABV, it's approachable enough to share with a mixed crowd but complex enough to satisfy a seasoned drinker. It's the kind of bottle that disappears quickly at a celebration without a single complaint. Buy it now!

Balcones Texas Pot Still: Where Bourbon Gets a Southern Accent

Balcones Distilling out of Waco, Texas has been one of the most provocative names in American craft whiskey since it opened in 2008, and its Texas Pot Still Bourbon is the most direct showcase of what the distillery does differently. The grain-to-glass bourbon is pot distilled — a method far more common in Scotch production than in bourbon — using a mash bill that includes roasted blue Hopi corn alongside Texas wheat, Texas rye, and malted barley. The result is a 92-proof spirit with a big, expressive character: toffee apple and tea chest on the nose, followed by chewy oak tannins, pecan pie, sweet honeycomb, cinnamon, and saddle leather on the palate. The Texas climate accelerates interaction between the spirit and the barrel, producing intensity and oak depth that older Kentucky bourbons at a fraction of the age don't always match. For anyone who thought bourbon had to taste the same way every time, this is the bottle that proves otherwise. Buy it now!

Elijah Craig Small Batch: The $35 Bottle That Shames Much Pricier Pours

Made at Heaven Hill Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky, Elijah Craig Small Batch uses a mash bill of 78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% malted barley, and is aged 8 to 12 years in #3 charred oak barrels before bottling at 94 proof. That extra aging is what separates it from most bottles in its price range — the oak has had genuine time to work, producing notes of honey, marzipan, caramel, and wildflower with a drying oak finish that feels earned rather than imposed. For years it served as the benchmark that serious bourbon drinkers used to evaluate everything else in the $30–$40 range, and it still holds that position. The low rye content keeps it approachable, while the proof and age deliver enough complexity to keep you coming back. If you want to understand what a well-aged Kentucky bourbon is actually capable of, this is your bottle. Buy it now!

Rabbit Hole Dareringer: For Anyone Who Loves Scotch But Won't Admit It

Founded by psychologist-turned-distiller Kaveh Zamanian in Louisville's NuLu neighbourhood, Rabbit Hole Distillery has always been about rewriting expectations — and Dareringer is the clearest expression of that philosophy. It's a straight bourbon with a high-malt mash bill of 68% corn, 18% wheat, and 14% malted barley, aged around five years in new toasted and charred oak barrels, then finished for six to eight months in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks from Spain's Casknolia Cooperage. The PX finishing adds a generous layer of raisins, figs, and dark chocolate that transforms the character into something closer to a sherried single malt than a typical Kentucky bourbon. Bottled at 93 proof and non-chill filtered, the wheat base provides a soft, round texture that lets the sherry influence land gracefully rather than overwhelmingly. It's an ideal bridge bottle for Scotch drinkers curious about American whiskey, and a revelation for bourbon drinkers ready to try something genuinely different. Buy it now!

Basil Hayden: Low Proof, High Manners

Basil Hayden is bottled at just 80 proof, making it one of the lightest bourbons on the mainstream market and one of the most frequently recommended bottles for people who find higher-proof spirits genuinely off-putting. It's part of the Beam Suntory family, produced at the same Clermont, Kentucky distillery as Knob Creek and Knob Creek's siblings, but it's built for a completely different drinker. The flavour profile leans into spice and pepper more than most entry-level bourbons, offering a peppery, tea-like complexity alongside notes of honey and light citrus that feel crisp rather than cloying. It's particularly well-suited for sipping neat or in a simple highball where its delicacy can shine. Think of it as the bourbon for someone who's been ordering gin and tonics but is ready to cross the aisle. Buy it now!

Eagle Rare 10 Year: A Step Up That Doesn't Feel Like a Leap

Eagle Rare is a 10-year single barrel bourbon from Buffalo Trace Distillery, bottled at 90 proof and retailing around $40 — making it one of the best value age-stated bourbons on the American market. Because it's single barrel, there's real variation between bottles, and the best examples deliver a cherry cola brightness alongside deeper oak, dried fruit, and subtle chocolate notes that feel richer and more complex than the flagship Buffalo Trace. If you've already worked through a bottle of Buffalo Trace and want to take the next logical step, this is exactly that bottle — same distillery DNA but with a decade of barrel work adding texture and depth. It competes directly with Russell's Reserve 10 Year and Knob Creek 9 Year in the same price tier, and serious bourbon drinkers regularly keep all three in rotation. It's also one of the most legitimately beautiful pours in the category for an Old Fashioned. Buy it now!

Penelope Bourbon: Modern Label, Modern Palate

Penelope Bourbon was founded by two childhood friends from New Jersey — Mike Paladini and Danny Polise — with Paladini naming the brand after his newborn daughter. The brand ages wheat and rye grain separately from the corn and barley components in new charred American oak barrels, a process designed to maximise the distinct contribution of each grain before blending. The result is a non-chill-filtered bourbon with a profile centred on clean corn grain sweetness, sweet cream, light vanilla, honey, and soft fruit notes — approachable and easy to return to after the first sip. It's modern in its branding and marketing, deliberately designed to reach drinkers who haven't historically seen themselves in a whiskey bottle. Penelope has become a gateway bourbon for a whole generation of younger drinkers who found the category's traditional imagery alienating. Buy it now!

New Riff Bottled-in-Bond: Craft Done With Zero Shortcuts

Founded in 2014 in Newport, Kentucky, New Riff Distilling built its entire identity around doing craft bourbon the way the old laws intended — full-sized barrels, Bottled-in-Bond standards, and absolutely no chill filtration. The mash bill is a bold 65% corn, 30% rye, and 5% malted barley, with the high rye content giving it a genuinely spicy, savory character that sets it apart from sweeter, more mainstream pours. On the nose you'll find oak, cinnamon-heavy spice, honey, and caramel, while the palate delivers peanut brittle, orange peel, buttered toffee, and a Dreamsicle-like vanilla and citrus combination on the long finish. The distillery is famously transparent — no secret mash bills, no sourcing behind a curtain — which has earned it an almost cult-level loyalty among drinkers who want to know exactly what they're drinking and why. At 100 proof and around $40–$50, it's one of the clearest arguments that craft distilling has genuinely matured. Buy it now!
