Bourbons Worth Pouring While You Watch the Sunset

The Perfect Bourbon for the Golden Hour

There is something about a sunset that slows time down — and bourbon, poured right, does the same thing. The amber glow in the glass mirrors the sky, and the warmth of a well-aged spirit matches the fading heat of the day. Whether you prefer something wheated and silky, high-rye and spiced, or a rare aged release that demands full attention, the right bottle turns an ordinary evening into something worth remembering. This list covers 17 bourbons — mainstream and craft, budget-conscious and splurge-worthy — each chosen because they reward the kind of unhurried sipping that a sunset demands.

Buffalo Trace: The Reliable Classic

Buffalo Trace is one of the most recognized names in American whiskey and has earned its place as a go-to for everyday sipping. It delivers rich, complex flavors of caramel, vanilla, and a gentle hint of spice that make it approachable for any palate. Produced at the historic Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, the mash bill skews corn-forward, producing a smooth, well-balanced character that never overstays its welcome. At roughly $30, it punches well above its price point and pours beautifully into an evening glass without demanding too much mental effort. It is the kind of bourbon you reach for when the moment is simple and the company is good. Buy it now!

Knob Creek 9 Year: 40 Years of Dependability

Knob Creek 9-Year-Old has been a consistent staple in the Jim Beam small-batch collection for nearly four decades, and its longevity is entirely earned. Bottled at 100 proof with a nine-year age statement, it offers the best set of specs in bourbon for the money — especially at a price that generally sits under $40. The palate delivers vanilla, toasted oak, caramel, and baking spice, with enough weight and structure to reward slow sipping without numbing the tongue. It is the kind of bottle that ends up on both beginner and expert shelves for the same reason: consistent quality that does not require explanation. Pour it neat or over a single large ice cube as the sun goes down. Buy it now!

Still Austin Red Corn BiB: Texas Grain, Texas Heat

Still Austin Whiskey Co. was the first true grain-to-glass distillery to open in Austin, Texas since Prohibition ended, and their Bottled in Bond Seasonal Series showcases that grain-forward philosophy in concentrated form. The Red Corn expression is built around Jimmy Red corn — a heritage variety grown entirely in Texas — alongside rye, and every grain in the bottle meets 100% Texas origin. It is bottled at exactly 100 proof as required by the 1897 Bottled-in-Bond Act, and uses a six-month slow water reduction process that draws out mature vanilla and caramel notes. The result features creamsicle and black tea on the nose, with peppermint and marzipan on the palate — layers of spice that are each distinct yet work exceedingly well together. Released in limited seasonal quantities, it is one of the most compelling grain-driven bourbons coming out of the Lone Star State. Buy it now!

Wild Turkey 101: The Stalwart That Never Disappoints

Wild Turkey 101 is one of the most honest value propositions in American whiskey — no trend-chasing, no clever label design, just bourbon that delivers every time. Its 101-proof bottling amplifies signature notes of vanilla, toffee, and baking spice, while subtle vegetal and earthy undertones provide enough character to earn respect sipped neat. Master Distillers Jimmy and Eddie Russell have a combined century of experience at the Lawrenceburg, Kentucky distillery, and that institutional knowledge shows in every batch. It works equally well over ice, with a splash of water, or straight from the bottle on a warm evening. For the price, it remains one of the most versatile and reliable bourbons available nationally. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof: The Benchmark for Big Bourbon

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof has been released in batches since 2013 and has quietly become one of the most respected recurring expressions in the bourbon world, with a loyal following that buys it consistently regardless of the batch number. It is a true barrel proof release, meaning the proof varies from batch to batch — typically ranging from the low 120s up past 130 — and it is never chill-filtered. Heaven Hill's 78% corn mash bill builds a sweet, corn-driven base that the uncut proof amplifies into dark fruit, rich caramel, baking spice, and a long, warming finish that coats the palate long after the glass is empty. It rewards patience: a few minutes in the glass or a drop of water opens up complexity that a quick sip misses. This is a sunset pour that demands your full attention. Buy it now!

Jefferson's Ocean: Bourbon That's Seen the World

Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea starts as fully matured Kentucky bourbon before being loaded onto a ship and sent on a voyage that crosses the equator multiple times and touches more than five continents. The constant motion, humidity changes, and sea air interact with the liquid through the barrel staves, imparting a distinctive briny quality alongside the more familiar bourbon notes of caramel and oak. The result is a rich amber whiskey with aromas of caramel, sea salt, and oak, and a palate layered with vanilla, dark chocolate, and a subtle briny note that leads to a smooth, memorable finish. Each voyage number is different, meaning the exact flavor profile shifts slightly from bottle to bottle — part of what makes it endlessly interesting. It is one of the more genuinely unconventional production methods in American whiskey, and it shows in the glass. Buy it now!

W.L. Weller Original: The Approachable Wheater

W.L. Weller is produced at the Buffalo Trace Distillery and is one of the original wheated bourbons — replacing the typical rye in the mash bill with wheat to produce a noticeably softer, gentler character. Wheated bourbons are generally considered the smoothest and most easy-drinking expression of the style, and Weller Original delivers rich notes of caramel, warm vanilla, and a whisper of fruit without the sharp rye edge that some newcomers find difficult. It has become harder to find on shelves in recent years as the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection has elevated the entire Weller lineup's profile, but the Original remains one of the most accessible bottles when you do spot it. At its MSRP, it represents exceptional value for what is effectively a gateway into the wheated bourbon style. Sip it slowly, because the softness makes it dangerously easy to enjoy. Buy it now!

Boulder Spirits Cask Strength: Colorado's World-Beater

Boulder Spirits, a craft distillery based in Boulder, Colorado, won World's Best Small Batch Bourbon at the 2025 World Whiskies Awards — a significant achievement for any distillery outside Kentucky. Their 2024 Cask Strength Bourbon is a limited-edition release bottled without dilution, offering a robust, intense flavor profile driven by a distinctive mash bill of 51% corn, 44% wheat, and just 5% rye — one of the highest wheat ratios you will find anywhere. The bourbon is distilled in small copper pot stills, which preserves the grain character, and uses locally sourced Colorado grains throughout. Expect a rich, full-bodied pour with the softness of a wheated mash amplified to cask-strength intensity. This is a bottle that proves world-class bourbon does not have to come from Kentucky.

Four Roses Single Barrel: Ten Recipes, One Perfect Pour

Four Roses operates with a unique production philosophy — two mash bills combined with five proprietary yeast strains produce ten distinct recipes, making it effectively the most complex system of any major distillery in America. The Single Barrel expression is drawn exclusively from the OBSV recipe: a high-rye mash bill with a yeast strain chosen for its light, delicate fruity character. Aged between 8 and 9 years and bottled at 100 proof, each barrel record includes the barrel number and warehouse code on the label, so no two bottles are identical. The nose offers spicy, oaky notes alongside sweet fudge, while the palate opens into vanilla, maple syrup, toasted rye bread, and baked raisins with a mellow, delicately spiced finish. At around $40–$50, it is one of the most consistently rewarding bottles at its price point. Buy it now!

New Riff Straight Bourbon: Craft That Converts Traditionalists

New Riff Distilling, based in Newport, Kentucky, sits among a small class of craft producers that use left-field production techniques without alienating drinkers who love classic bourbon. Their core Straight Bourbon expression — released in 2024 at a full four years older than their earlier bottled-in-bond releases — is built on a genuinely high-rye mash bill that delivers savory, spicy character from the first sniff. The distillery uses a sweet mash and proprietary grain sourcing to coax out distinctive notes from every stage of production: base ingredients, fermentation, and distillation each leave their mark alongside the easy-to-love sweetness from new American oak. The palate brings butterscotch, brown sugar, vanilla, and a warm rye spice that lingers into a clean, satisfying finish. This is the bourbon for the drinker who wants complexity without paying three figures for it. Buy it now!

Widow Jane 10 Year: Brooklyn Craftsmanship, Southern Soul

Widow Jane is a Brooklyn-based distillery with a genuinely distinctive production philosophy: all of their bourbons are proofed down using limestone-rich water drawn from the Rosendale mine in New York — the same mine that provided cement for the Brooklyn Bridge. The 10 Year Old Straight Bourbon is aged for a decade and carries a deep amber color with a nose of caramel, toasted oak, and vanilla that immediately signals its maturity. On the palate, rich honey, dried fruit, and warm spices intermingle in a velvety-smooth texture that builds toward a long, elegant finish with lingering warmth. It is regularly cited as one of the best bottles for straight sipping, and the age statement gives it credibility that many craft expressions struggle to achieve. The combination of a unique water source, thoughtful aging, and real flavor payoff makes it one of the most interesting bottles in the craft segment. Buy it now!

1792 Full Proof: Bold, Unapologetic, Brilliant

1792 Full Proof is produced at the Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky — the heart of bourbon country — and takes its name from the year Kentucky became a state. The Full Proof expression was named for the fact that it is bottled at the same proof at which it entered the barrel, making it barrel-strength without the dramatic variability of a cask-strength release. It delivers dark chocolate, caramel, and baking spices in a rich, full-bodied package that has made it a genuine favorite among enthusiasts seeking complexity and depth without paying premium-tier prices. The 2025 World Whiskies Awards recognized 1792 Small Batch as the Best Kentucky Small Batch Bourbon, underscoring the distillery's reputation for quality at accessible price points. Full Proof sits above that benchmark and is worth every cent of its modest asking price. Buy it now!

Smokeye Hill Barrel Proof: High-Altitude Colorado Grain

Smokeye Hill Distillery is a Colorado craft producer making bourbon with a distinctly regional identity, incorporating heirloom blue corn alongside malted barley and yellow corn and rye in its mash. The Barrel Proof Straight Bourbon carries a rich copper hue that signals serious concentration, and the nose opens with notably more caramel and vanilla intensity than the distillery's standard bottling. The blue corn contributes a flavor character that reads differently from the typical yellow corn sweetness — earthier and with a more textural depth on the mid-palate. At cask strength, the spirit is curiously smooth despite its high ABV, with the barrel proof amplifying the grain character rather than simply adding heat. For drinkers wanting to explore what high-altitude American terroir can bring to bourbon, Smokeye Hill is a fascinating stop. Buy it now!

Heaven Hill Heritage 18 Year: An 18-Year Meditation

The Heaven Hill Heritage Collection 18-Year-Old is a limited annual release drawn from 133 barrels laid down in December 2005 and selected from the third floor of Heaven Hill's Rickhouse 1I — a placement that exposes barrels to more temperature extremes and accelerates certain flavor compounds. Bottled at 120 proof with a mash bill of 78% corn, 12% malted barley, and 10% rye, it is priced at $299.99 and represents one of the most compelling aged bourbon releases in recent memory. The nose is rich and structured with deep brown sugar, warm vanilla, oak, a little maple, and a run of black pepper; the palate follows with old leather, oak char, and vanilla sweetness leading to a dry, spicy finish. VinePair named it the top-rated bourbon for 2025, noting it remains surprisingly fresh despite its age and never feels overly oaky or tannic — a genuine achievement at 18 years. Track it down for a special occasion and let the glass sit for a few minutes before that first sip. Buy it now!

Maker's Mark: The Wheated Gateway That Never Gets Old

Maker's Mark has been the entry point into wheated bourbon for generations of drinkers, and it holds that position for good reason — the formula has not changed meaningfully since Bill Samuels Sr. developed it in the 1950s. Made at Loretto, Kentucky with a mash bill of corn, soft red winter wheat, and malted barley, it is always bottled at 90 proof, making it one of the most approachable and consistent bourbons on the market. The palate is warm and sweet with caramel, vanilla, a touch of fruit, and the gentle wheat note that keeps the finish smooth and brief rather than sharp and lingering. Magic happens in wheated bourbon proofed well past the century mark — as the Wood Finishing and Cask Strength expressions prove — but the original is still the most iconic sunset pour in the lineup. It is the kind of bottle that never sits unopened for long. Buy it now!

King of Kentucky 2025: Brown-Forman's Annual Masterpiece

Brown-Forman's King of Kentucky has become one of the most anticipated annual limited releases in American whiskey, and the 2025 edition — aged 17 years and bottled at 127 proof — only strengthens what is already a formidable legacy. Drawn from just 63 hand-selected barrels by Master Distiller Emeritus Chris Morris, the nose opens with dark brown sugar, seasoned oak, molasses, aged leather, and syrup-soaked raisin. The palate unfolds into cocoa powder, cherry cola, cinnamon syrup, and spiced stewed apple, while the finish lingers with dry leather, tannic oak, and bursts of cinnamon and nutmeg. At 17 years, it walks the tightrope between deep oak integration and primary bourbon sweetness with a confidence few releases at this age achieve. It is the bottle you open when the sunset deserves a ceremony.
