Bourbons for Sherried Scotch Drinkers

Why Sherried Scotch Drinkers Should Explore Bourbon

If Macallan, GlenDronach, or Aberlour are your go-to drams, your palate is wired for dried fruit, cocoa, baking spice, and a satisfying weight in the glass. Bourbon can't replicate sherry-seasoned European oak exactly — the production rules are fundamentally different — but a growing wave of American whiskeys are bridging that gap through sherry cask finishing, high-rye mash bills, and long maturation. The result is a category of bourbons that delivers raisins, dark fruit, and rich texture through a distinctly American lens of corn sweetness and charred oak. Whether you're curious about crossing the aisle or looking for something to pour when your sherried single malt bottle runs dry, this list covers the spectrum from approachable everyday bottles to serious collector-grade pours.

Rabbit Hole Dareringer: The PX Sherry Gateway

Louisville's Rabbit Hole Distillery has built a reputation around sherry cask finishes that deliver real depth and fruitiness, and Dareringer is the most direct expression of that philosophy. The bourbon is rested and finished in handmade Pedro Ximénez sherry casks imported from Spain, adding layers of raisins, currants, and a hint of almond alongside vanilla from the American oak base. Bottled at 93 proof (46.5% ABV), it offers a smooth, plush texture that Macallan drinkers will find familiar. The PX influence comes through clearly — the raisin and fig character will be immediately recognisable to anyone who reaches for sherried Scotch. It has earned multiple gold medals at major international competitions, including the IWSC, World Whisky Awards, and San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Buy it now!

Legent Bourbon: East-West Sherry Complexity at a Low Price

Legent is a collaboration between Jim Beam Master Distiller Fred Noe and Suntory Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo, and the result is one of the most accessible sherry-influenced bourbons on the market. The production process involves finishing separate batches of mature Kentucky straight bourbon in ex-sherry casks and California red wine casks, then blending them together with unfinished bourbon in the Japanese style. The sherry casks contribute spice, raisin, and dried fruit flavors, while the red wine casks layer in mild fruity notes, and the unfinished bourbon keeps the classic caramel and vanilla foundation intact. On the palate it is spicy with dark red fruit and hints of leather, with a darker, lingering finish that rewards the Scotch drinker's patience. At around $36 and bottled at 94 proof, it is one of the most compelling entry points for sherried Scotch fans exploring American whiskey. Buy it now!

Wyoming Whiskey Double Cask: Prairie Raisins and PX Sweetness

Introduced in 2017, Wyoming Whiskey Double Cask starts with the distillery's five-year-old bourbon made from a wheated mash bill of 68% corn, 20% wheat, and 12% malted barley, then finishes it in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks sourced directly from Spain. The PX casks — among the sweetest type of sherry cooperage available — impart a secondary layer of dried fruit, concentrated raisin, and oxidative complexity on top of the wheat-driven softness of the base spirit. The sherry influence sits on the moderate side, meaning the result is not a one-dimensional sherry bomb but a balanced, dark and expressive pour that nods toward Speyside without abandoning its American character. It is bottled at 50% ABV, giving it enough strength to project the aromatics without overwhelming. For fans of lighter sherried Scotches like Glenrothes 12, this wheated bourbon with PX finishing is a natural bridge. Buy it now!

Angel's Envy Oloroso: The Premium Sherry Statement

While Angel's Envy is best known for its Ruby Port finish, this limited expression takes the Louisville distillery's 72% corn, 18% rye, 10% malted barley bourbon and finishes it in ex-Oloroso sherry casks for an additional two to three years after four to nine years in new American oak. Bottled at 50% ABV (100 proof), it presents a deep mahogany color with glints of copper and a robust nose loaded with raisins, dried fruit, and a touch of smoke reminiscent of a cabin fire. This was the first new Angel's Envy expression released since 2013 and the first produced without the guidance of founder and patriarch Lincoln Henderson, marking it as a significant release in the brand's history. The Oloroso sherry delivers a drier, more oxidative finish than PX-finished bourbons, making it a particularly compelling match for fans of GlenDronach or Aberlour A'bunadh. At around $200 per 750ml it is a premium commitment, but one that speaks directly to the sherried Scotch drinker's palate.

Barrell Craft Spirits PX Sherry: Cask Strength Dark Fruit

Louisville-based Barrell Craft Spirits is the original pre-eminent independent blender of cask strength American whiskey, and their Cask Finish Series PX Sherry release is one of the boldest sherry-influenced bourbons available. The blend brings together straight bourbons from Indiana, Tennessee, and Kentucky ranging from six to fifteen years of age, then finishes the entire blend in Pedro Ximénez sherry barrels. It is bottled at cask strength of 115.52 proof, meaning it lands in territory familiar to Glendronach Cask Strength or Aberlour A'bunadh drinkers who prefer their whisky undiluted and at full intensity. The result is dense and layered, with lush red fruits, dried figs, rye spice, and walnut syrup woven together across a long finish. For sherried Scotch collectors who are unafraid of high proof, this is one of the most direct American analogues to a cask-strength sherried single malt. Buy it now!

Lux Row Small Batch PX Sherry: Accessible High-Proof Fruit

Lux Row Distillers launched this expression nationwide in February 2025, making it one of the newer and more affordable PX sherry-finished bourbons on the market at a suggested retail price of $49.99. The base is a four-year-old ryed Kentucky straight bourbon, finished for over six months in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks and bottled at a bold 112 proof (56% ABV). The PX sherry cask imparts an aromatic bouquet of dried figs and dates alongside decadent flavors of grape syrup and candied fruit, followed by hints of spice, roasted coffee, and dark chocolate — a flavour architecture that closely mirrors the Speyside sherried style. Master Distiller John Rempe designed the expression specifically to meld the intensely sweet characteristics of PX sherry with the spicy, peppery notes of their ryed bourbon mash bill. It debuted at the distillery in October 2024 and quickly became a favourite among visitors before going national. Buy it now!

Noble Oak Double Oak: An Entry-Level Sherry Bridge

Noble Oak Double Oak Bourbon is one of the most accessible sherry-influenced bourbons available, making it an ideal starting point for sherried Scotch drinkers who want to test the waters without a significant financial commitment. The whiskey is finished in sherry-seasoned oak, which adds a soft, nutty character and just enough sherry influence to make the pour interesting without overwhelming the bourbon underneath. The texture is gentle and approachable, with caramel and vanilla from the American oak base complemented by dried fruit and a subtle oxidative quality from the sherry wood. For anyone curious about sherry-finished whiskey but not yet ready to spend heavily, Noble Oak represents a smart and honest entry into the category. As a bonus, the brand plants a tree for every bottle sold, adding an environmental dimension to the purchase. Buy it now!

Old Forester 1910: Double Barrel Richness Without a Wine Cask

Old Forester 1910 Old Fine Whisky does not use a sherry or wine cask finish, but it earns a place on this list because its production method produces a flavour profile that consistently surprises sherried Scotch drinkers. The whiskey is first matured in new charred American oak barrels, then transferred to a second charred barrel for an additional finishing period — a process that concentrates the spirit and intensifies rich, dessert-like notes of dark toffee, dried fruit, chocolate, and toasted oak. Bartenders across the country have called it one of the few bourbons that can make a Scotch drinker do a double-take, owing to its weight and complexity. At 96 proof and broadly available at around $50, it offers a genuinely rich and satisfying pour that rewards the patient Scotch drinker's sipping style. It demonstrates that the character sherried Scotch fans love can sometimes emerge through oak maturation alone rather than requiring a European wine cask finish. Buy it now!

Starlight Distillery: Estate Grain Complexity for Scotch Lovers

Starlight Distillery is made at Huber's Orchard and Winery in Borden, Indiana, where the family has been farming since the 1840s and distilling bourbon since 2013, with more than 85% of the grain grown on the estate. While Starlight does not rely on sherry or wine cask finishing, it earns its place here through a mash bill detail that will look immediately familiar to a Scotch drinker: a significant malted barley component that adds a grain character rarely found in standard Kentucky bourbons. The result is a richly layered spirit with vanilla, red fruits, and a smooth, gentle texture driven by the estate-grown corn and barley working in tandem. The depth of flavour that comes from estate grain production, rather than commodity sourcing, gives it a provenance and complexity that resonates with single malt enthusiasts who value terroir. For sherried Scotch drinkers looking for a bourbon that offers more grain-driven character alongside the expected sweetness, Starlight is an instructive and enjoyable detour. Buy it now!
