American Single Malts That Beat Scotch at Its Own Game

America's Malt Revolution Has Arrived

For most of American whiskey history, barley played a supporting role — enzymes in a mash bill, background noise behind corn and rye. That changed quietly over the past three decades as a wave of distillers began making 100% malted barley whiskey on American soil, taking genuine inspiration from Scotland while refusing to copy it. The category received its long-overdue legitimacy in December 2024, when the TTB officially ratified American Single Malt as a distinct spirits category — the first new classification in over 52 years. With more than 200 producers and over 1,000 bottlings now on the market, the breadth is staggering: peated Pacific Northwest expressions, mesquite-smoked desert whiskeys, sherry-finished Blue Ridge malts, and age-stated Rocky Mountain showstoppers. These are twelve bottles proving that American single malt isn't chasing Scotch — it's rewriting the rulebook entirely.

Stranahan's Mountain Angel 10-Year: Colorado's Platinum Crown

Founded in 2004 by Jess Graber and George Stranahan, Stranahan's is Colorado's first legal distillery since Prohibition and has become the benchmark against which other American single malts are measured. Their Mountain Angel 10-Year earned a 96/100 Platinum Medal at the Beverage Testing Institute's 2024 American whiskey judging — the top score of any ASM that year — and is bottled at 45.1% ABV. Denver's high altitude creates a uniquely accelerated angel's share, allowing Mountain Angel to develop a depth of flavor comparable to a Scotch whisky considerably older than its decade. The nose offers aged oak, pear, and baking spice, while the palate delivers salted caramels and stone fruit compote with an impressively long finish of dark chocolate and tobacco. Buy it now!

Westland Garryana 10th Edition: Pacific Northwest Terroir in a Glass

Westland Distillery opened in Seattle, Washington, in 2010 and has become one of the longest-running American single malt producers, taking deliberate cues from Scotch by rooting its whiskeys in a strong sense of place. The Garryana 10th Edition marks both a decade of the label and carries a 10-year age statement — a genuine rarity in the still-young ASM category. It is a blend of Westland's signature five-malt barley bill and Washington pale malt, aged in first and second-fill Garry oak barrels and supported by additional single malt finished in Pedro Ximenez, rum, and ex-bourbon casks. The result is wholly unique: dried red fruits and bonfire smoke on the nose, with cedar, cinnamon, dried apricot, and light caramel on the palate and a lingering, complex finish that rewards patience. Virginia Distillery Co. Courage & Conviction: Blue Ridge Complexity

Hailing from the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia Distillery Co.'s flagship Courage & Conviction Signature Malt is aged for a minimum of six years using 100% North American malted barley in a combination of ex-bourbon, ex-sherry, and STR wine casks — a maturation approach that mirrors Scottish multi-cask techniques while deploying distinctly American raw material. What makes it particularly surprising is its character: rather than leading with sweetness, it leans into savory, herbaceous territory with notes of lemon rind, rosemary, white chocolate, and gentle chili spice, prompting reviewers to compare it unexpectedly to a rye whiskey. The finish is warmly spiced with soft caramel and woodiness — comforting but never simple. It's one of the more accessible entry points to the category in terms of price and availability, without compromising on ambition. Buy it now!

Balcones Texas Single Malt: Lone Star Muscle

Balcones Distillery was established in 2009 in Waco, Texas, initially in an old welding shop, before moving into a larger facility equipped with copper pot stills made by Forsyths of Scotland — the same coppersmiths used by many Scotch distilleries. Their Texas Single Malt is made with 100% Golden Promise malted barley, much of it Texas-grown, pot distilled, and aged a minimum of four years in new oak barrels with custom toast and char profiles. The brutal Texas climate — extreme heat and wide temperature swings — forces rapid interaction between spirit and wood, producing a big, bold whiskey bottled at cask strength 53% ABV. On the palate it is silky and full, with lightly toasted bread, fresh butter, marmalade, brown sugar morphing into molasses, and a long finish of charred wood and counterbalancing acidity. It won Best American Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards in 2014 and has been picking up medals ever since. Buy it now!

McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt: America's Islay Answer

Created by Clear Creek Distillery — now operated by Hood River Distillers — McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt is widely credited as one of the first American single malts produced after Prohibition, with the late distiller Steve McCarthy pioneering the expression in 1996. It is made from 100% malted barley imported from Scotland, heavily peated in the Islay tradition, and aged three years in oak barrels in the foothills of Mount Hood, Oregon. The whiskey draws repeated comparisons to prominent Islay Scotches like Lagavulin, yet the Pacific Northwest oak aging and cool, damp climate give it its own distinct regional character. It is a foundational bottle for understanding what the American single malt category is capable of when it takes the Scotch tradition seriously rather than just borrowing its aesthetics. Buy it now!

Whiskey Del Bac Dorado: Desert Fire and Mesquite Smoke

Founded in 2011 and based in Tucson, Arizona, Whiskey Del Bac is one of only a handful of American distilleries to smoke their barley over velvet mesquite — a native desert wood that gives the spirit a character unlike any Scotch peat you've encountered. Dorado is made using the traditional Scottish model of whisky-making: 100% barley malted and smoked in-house over mesquite, then copper pot distilled, aged in the Arizona desert, and bottled on-site at 46% ABV without chill filtration. The nose delivers tobacco, chocolate, and desert campfire embers — distinct and unmistakably Southwestern — while the palate finishes with soft tannins and sweet toffee. Whisky Advocate awarded it 90 points, and the expression's singular regional identity is precisely the kind of innovation that makes American single malt impossible to dismiss as a Scotch imitation. Westward American Single Malt: Oregon's Craft Beer Heritage in a Bottle

Produced in Portland, Oregon, Westward Whiskey (formerly House Spirits Distillery, founded in 2004) built its philosophy on a simple but powerful idea: ferment the mash with craft ale yeast, then double pot distill the result. That brewing-influenced approach produces a distinctly fruity, aromatic spirit before the barrels have even entered the picture. The flagship American single malt is aged in new, heavily toasted American oak and bottled at 45% ABV, with a profile of orchard fruit, oaky baking spice, vanilla, caramel, and a nutty, malt-shake richness. Oregon's hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters create ideal seasonal barrel cycling conditions, accelerating maturation in ways that Scottish distillers would envy. The distillery also produces cask-finished variants — including Stout Cask and Pinot Noir Cask — that draw directly on the Pacific Northwest's legendary brewing and wine cultures. Buy it now!

Stranahan's Sherry Cask: Rocky Mountain Meets the Bodegas

While Stranahan's Mountain Angel gets the trophy-shelf attention, the Sherry Cask expression is the one that speaks most directly to Scotch drinkers who grew up on sherried Speyside malts. It begins in virgin American white oak barrels before finishing in both PX and Oloroso sherry casks sourced from Spain — a finishing protocol virtually identical to the one used by distilleries like Glenfarclas or Aberlour. The result is a whiskey loaded with honey, Montmorency cherries, black currant, fig, and nutty brine, with walnut rounding out a long, drying finish. Stranahan's dominated the BTI's 2024 American whiskey judging, winning multiple gold medals including recognition for this expression, and it remains one of the most convincing arguments that American distillers understand sherry maturation as well as anyone in Scotland. Cedar Ridge QuintEssential: Iowa's Smoky Surprise

Cedar Ridge Distillery in Swisher, Iowa is not the first state that comes to mind when someone mentions single malt whiskey, which is precisely what makes their QuintEssential so satisfying. The expression — its name a nod to five distinct cask types used in maturation — has earned recognition from major international competitions including the IWSC, whose judges described the nose as offering enticing lemon zest and subtle smoke leading to a palate that balances earthy richness with notes of apple pie and custard cream. Cedar Ridge sources its barley locally and ages in Iowa's continental climate, where harsh winters and hot summers push the spirit through dramatic seasonal barrel cycles. For Scotch drinkers who appreciate lightly smoked Speyside expressions, this is an Iowa distillery quietly producing something worth paying serious attention to. Buy it now!

Balcones Lineage: The Scotch-Style Sibling Worth Knowing

Where Balcones Texas Single Malt announces itself at cask strength with maximum oak impact, Lineage is the Waco distillery's more considered homage to the Scottish tradition — its name an intentional nod to the Scotch lineage it draws from. It is lighter and older than the flagship Texas 1, using a softer approach to wood that allows the malted barley character to sing more clearly rather than fighting against aggressive new oak. The flavor profile shifts toward the approachable and elegant end of the Balcones range: soft stone fruits, gentle cereal sweetness, vanilla, and a restrained woodiness that recalls a well-aged Speyside rather than anything Texas-forward. For Scotch drinkers dipping a toe into American single malt for the first time, Lineage is among the most welcoming entry points the category has to offer, while still carrying the unmistakable Balcones stamp of quality.
