Barrell Craft Spirits Cask Finish Series: Amburana

Barrell Craft Spirits' Amburana-finished bourbon reflects true blending expertise in working with one of the most challenging cask types available. Amburana wood imparts strong cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and vanilla spice notes, requiring careful balance to enhance rather than overpower the bourbon. The blending team created a blend of two mash bills with different char levels finished in Amburana casks, then layered in a vatting of unfinished individual casks to add depth, richness, and complexity, ensuring the bourbon shines through first and foremost. Rather than working with cubes, spirals, staves, or other oak alternatives, Chief Whiskey Scientist Tripp Stimson sourced true 53-gallon barrels made from sustainably harvested Amburana wood, investing a full year of R&D to achieve the right timing and conditions for optimal flavor balance. The wood's strong impact within a short time frame demands a level of expertise that goes far beyond simply filling and waiting, involving the delicate art of blending and small adjustments to proof, temperature, and other conditions that allow the Amburana contribution to complement the bourbon's natural attributes.
