Amazing High-Rye Bourbons

The Bold, Spicy World of High-Rye Bourbon

High-rye bourbon sits at a fascinating crossroads between the sweetness of classic bourbon and the assertive spice of straight rye whiskey. While all bourbon must contain at least 51% corn by law, it's the secondary grains that shape the character in the glass — and when rye climbs to 18% or higher in the mash bill, the result is a noticeably bolder, more complex spirit. Expect flavors of black pepper, baking spice, dried fruit, mint, and a drier, more structured finish than wheated or traditional bourbons. There is no official legal threshold for the term, but the industry broadly treats mash bills with 18% to 35% rye as falling within the high-rye range. With the craft distilling revival fueling renewed interest in grain-forward recipes, this style has never been more exciting to explore.

Bulleit Bourbon: The Bartender's High-Rye Go-To

Bulleit Bourbon has become one of the most recognizable high-rye expressions on the market, with a widely reported mash bill of 68% corn, 28% rye, and 4% malted barley — an unusually elevated rye proportion for a nationally distributed bottle. The brand traces its origins to Augustus Bulleit, a 19th-century Louisville figure whose original recipe leaned heavily on rye, giving the whiskey a bold, spicy character uncommon for its time. On the nose, Bulleit delivers black pepper, orange zest, and cinnamon, backed by restrained caramel sweetness. Its high-rye content makes it a standout cocktail bourbon, cutting cleanly through vermouth or simple syrup in a Manhattan or Old Fashioned without becoming muddled. Bottled at 45% ABV, it remains one of the most affordable and widely available entry points into the high-rye style. Buy it now!

Woodford Reserve: Elegant High-Rye Refinement

Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select sits at the gentler end of the high-rye spectrum, built on a mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley — enough rye to provide structure and spice without overwhelming the palate. Produced at the historic Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles, Kentucky, the spirit is triple-distilled in copper pot stills and aged for approximately seven years in bespoke barrels coopered at the distillery's own cooperage. The nose is rich with dried fruit, mint, and orange, dusted with cocoa, while the palate offers a chewy, rounded experience of citrus, cinnamon, and caramel. Its elevated malted barley content adds a distinctly nutty dimension that sets it apart from other high-rye bourbons of similar proof. Bottled at 90.4 proof, it strikes a balance between approachability and complexity that has made it a staple on back bars worldwide. Buy it now!

Four Roses Small Batch Select: A Six-Recipe Rye Showcase

Four Roses Small Batch Select represents one of the most transparent and intellectually fascinating high-rye bourbons in the mainstream market, blending six of the distillery's ten distinct recipes — each combining one of two mash bills with one of five proprietary yeast strains. The two mash bills in play are an 'E' bill (75% corn, 20% rye, 5% malted barley) and a 'B' bill (60% corn, 35% rye, 5% malted barley), meaning every drop in the bottle contains a meaningful rye contribution. Aged between six and seven years, the blend is bottled at 104 proof and left non-chill filtered for richer, closer-to-the-barrel flavor. Aromas of raspberries, cloves, and nutmeg give way to a palate of apricot, berries, vanilla, and light oak, finishing with spearmint and cinnamon. It was introduced as the distillery's first permanent line extension in 12 years and quickly earned acclaim as a best-in-class expression of the high-rye style. Buy it now!

Kentucky Peerless High Rye: World's Best in 2024

Kentucky Peerless High Rye Bourbon made global headlines when it was awarded the 2024 Bourbon Trophy for World's Best Bourbon at the International Wine & Spirits Competition — a remarkable achievement for a relatively young Louisville craft distillery. The expression introduced an entirely new mash bill to the Peerless lineup, the first major departure from the recipe used across their standard bourbon and barrel-finished offerings, with a higher rye proportion designed to amplify the grain's sweet-and-spicy contribution. On the nose, it leads with warm seasoned oak, leather, and citrus, with cedar, dark fruit, and sweet grasses adding depth. The first sip delivers candied oak, toasted sugar, and charred orange, while subsequent sips introduce warm leather and rich tobacco, with sweet and earthy notes competing in an exciting finish. Bottled at 45% ABV and produced in small batches from grain to bottle, it is priced at around $150 — a premium reflecting both its award-winning status and Peerless's meticulous craft approach. Rabbit Hole Heigold: Craft Louisville Grain-to-Bottle Rye Power

Rabbit Hole Distillery, founded in Louisville by Kaveh Zamanian, built its reputation around unconventional mash bills and full production transparency — and the Heigold High-Rye Bourbon is the purest expression of that philosophy. The mash bill runs 70% corn, 25% rye, and 5% malted barley, putting the rye proportion at the upper end of what major producers use and producing a noticeably assertive spice and pepper character that goes well beyond standard bourbon. Named in tribute to Christian Heigold, a German immigrant stonemason who settled in Louisville in the 19th century, the whiskey carries a sense of place and heritage in every bottle. It is distilled, aged, and bottled entirely at the Louisville facility with no sourcing, giving Zamanian complete control over every stage of production. Four Roses Single Barrel: Rye Spice at Full Throttle

Four Roses Single Barrel is bottled exclusively from the 'B' mash bill — 60% corn, 35% rye, and 5% malted barley — making it one of the highest-rye expressions from any major Kentucky distillery and a benchmark against which craft producers are often measured. Every bottle comes from a single warehouse and a single barrel, meaning each release is unique, but the high-rye foundation ensures consistent spicy complexity across all selections. The spirit is aged for a minimum of seven years and bottled at 100 proof without chill filtration, delivering rich rye tones before seamlessly transitioning into flavors of allspice, cocoa, and cinnamon. Collectors and enthusiasts also seek out private barrel selections, where individual retailers choose specific barrels offering even more pronounced rye character. It stands as one of the clearest, most approachable demonstrations of how a 35% rye mash bill can produce layered complexity without sacrificing balance. Buy it now!

New Riff Distilling in Newport, Kentucky has built its entire brand identity around a high-rye philosophy, using a 30% rye mash bill across its core bourbon lineup — well above industry norms for a distillery of its size and output. The distillery is also one of a small number of Kentucky producers to use a traditional sour mash process while simultaneously committing to bottled-in-bond standards, ensuring a minimum of four years of barrel aging and no chill filtration. Basil Hayden's: Approachable High-Rye for the Curious Sipper

Basil Hayden's is one of the best-known entry-level high-rye bourbons in America, built on the old Pepper family recipe that Jim Beam revived — a mash bill featuring approximately twice the rye content of standard Jim Beam expressions. Bottled at a lighter 80 proof, it is deliberately engineered for accessibility, making the high-rye style approachable for bourbon newcomers who might be put off by the intensity of higher-proof expressions. The palate is gentle but clearly rye-influenced, with notes of pepper, light oak, and subtle citrus wrapped in a thin but pleasant sweetness. It is part of Beam Suntory's small batch collection alongside Knob Creek, Booker's, and Baker's, and it serves as a gateway that has introduced countless drinkers to the concept of rye-forward bourbon. While seasoned high-rye enthusiasts may find it underwhelming, its role as a widely available, affordable ambassador for the style is undeniable. Buy it now!

Michter's US*1: Small-Batch High-Rye With Toasted Barrel Depth

Michter's US*1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon is produced from a high-rye mash bill and undergoes an additional heat-cycling treatment during barrel aging, a proprietary process the distillery says drives deeper wood interaction and a richer, more layered flavor profile. The brand, revived in Louisville after decades away, has built a reputation for quality-obsessive production decisions — including barrel entry proof, barrel selection, and a refusal to bottle anything that doesn't meet their internal standards. Tasting notes regularly include dried cherry, caramel, toasted oak, vanilla, and warming rye spice, with a finish that lingers notably longer than the 91.4 proof might suggest. Michter's has won multiple accolades across its range and the US*1 Bourbon remains its most accessible expression, typically retailing around $45. It occupies a compelling space between approachable everyday sipper and serious collector's staple, drawing both casual drinkers and whiskey enthusiasts. Buy it now!

High West Double Rye: Utah's Boldest High-Rye Hybrid

High West Distillery in Park City, Utah produces Double Rye, a blend of two distinct high-rye mash bills — a younger, more intensely spiced MGP Indiana rye and an older, more mellow rye — creating a whiskey that straddles the line between high-rye bourbon character and outright rye whiskey intensity. The MGP component uses a 95% rye mash bill while the older component brings depth and balance, and the blend is typically bottled at around 92 proof. The nose opens with assertive rye spice — dill, caraway, mint, and pepper — while the palate adds caramel sweetness and vanilla to the equation, making it approachable for bourbon drinkers stepping into spicier territory. High West is notable as one of the first craft distilleries in Utah and has pioneered a blending-forward approach that many have since emulated. For fans of high-rye bourbon who want to push further into spice-driven territory without crossing fully into straight rye, Double Rye is a natural next step. Buy it now!

Old Forester 1920: High-Rye Heritage at Full Proof

Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style is the highest-proof expression in Brown-Forman's Whiskey Row Series, bottled at 115 proof and paying homage to the bonded warehouse bourbon that Old Forester kept producing during Prohibition for medicinal purposes. The high-rye mash bill — 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley — matches the profile used across the Old Forester range, but the elevated proof and extended maturation period allow the rye character to express itself far more dramatically than in lower-proof siblings. Expect bold notes of toffee, rich vanilla, dark cherry, and caramel on the nose, with the palate delivering an intense but balanced wave of baking spice, charred oak, and chocolate. The finish is long, warm, and deeply satisfying, with rye pepper lingering well after the last sip. It consistently earns praise as one of the best high-proof, high-rye values in American whiskey, typically retailing around $50. Buy it now!

Breckenridge High Proof: Colorado High-Altitude High-Rye

Breckenridge Distillery in Breckenridge, Colorado produces its High Proof Bourbon at an elevation of nearly 10,000 feet above sea level, where the extreme temperature swings between mountain nights and sunny days accelerate barrel interaction in ways that flatland distilleries simply cannot replicate. The mash bill leans heavily on rye, with a blend of local and sourced grains that pushes the rye content well above typical bourbon proportions, producing a spirit that is both bolder and more fruit-forward than many Kentucky counterparts at similar ages. Rocky Mountain snowmelt water is used throughout production, which distillers claim contributes to an unusually clean and mineral-tinged base spirit. Bottled at cask strength — typically around 114 proof — the High Proof expression delivers layers of dark cherry, butterscotch, cinnamon, and white pepper, with a warming, extended finish shaped by the unique mountain aging environment. It has earned a string of accolades at national competitions and introduced many drinkers to the idea that genuinely great high-rye bourbon can come from outside Kentucky. Buy it now!
