9 Bottles to Reach For Instead of Eagle Rare

Eagle Rare Is Great — But It's Not the Only Game in Town

Eagle Rare 10 Year has earned its reputation as one of the most approachable aged bourbons on the market. Produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery using a low-rye Mashbill #1, it delivers a profile of toffee, orange peel, honeycomb, and candied almonds at a comfortable 90 proof. The problem is availability: demand has consistently outpaced supply, leaving enthusiasts hunting bottles that should be sitting calmly on shelves. Whether you're tired of the chase, want to broaden your palate, or simply prefer not to pay secondary market prices, there are excellent bottles across a range of styles and price points that deliver equal or greater satisfaction.

W.L. Weller Special Reserve: The Wheated Gateway

Weller Special Reserve is the entry point into Buffalo Trace's wheated bourbon line, using wheat instead of rye as the secondary grain for a notably softer, rounder character. Bottled at 90 proof — the same as Eagle Rare — it shares the same proof point but swaps out the dry, oak-driven finish for a gentler honeysuckle sweetness and notes of butterscotch, honey, and baked apple. The nose opens with vanilla wafer and caramel before red fruit and subtle cedar develop in the background. At an MSRP of around $25–$30, it represents outstanding value, though it has itself become harder to find in some markets due to the hype surrounding the broader Weller lineup. Buy it now!

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof: More of Everything Eagle Rare Promises

If Eagle Rare's approachable 90-proof profile leaves you wanting more depth, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof turns every dial up without losing coherence. Released three times annually by Heaven Hill, each batch carries an age statement reflecting the youngest barrels in the blend — recent releases have come in at around 11 years old. The nose delivers charred oak, cinnamon, brown sugar, and stewed fruit, while the bold palate packs caramel, dark fruit, pie crust, and prominent baking spices. The spices carry into the finish alongside tobacco, caramel chews, and vanilla, with a lingering heat that makes for a lengthy, rewarding close. At roughly $60–$70, it's one of bourbon's most celebrated values at cask strength. Buy it now!

Russell's Reserve 10 Year: Wild Turkey's Premium Answer

Wild Turkey launched Russell's Reserve as its premium sub-brand, drawing on the combined expertise of legendary master distillers Jimmy and Eddie Russell across nearly a century of distilling experience. The 10-year expression is bottled at 90 proof and hand-selected in small batches, delivering a deep caramel and vanilla backbone with a characteristically smooth finish. On the nose you'll find sweet hints of burnt oak and warm spice, while the palate brings rich flavors reminiscent of Thanksgiving pie — cloves, cinnamon, and vanilla building to a buttery finish of maple syrup and brown sugar. It matches Eagle Rare's age statement and proof almost exactly, yet carries a distinctly bolder, more indulgent sweetness that many find more satisfying. Buy it now!

E.H. Taylor Small Batch: Eagle Rare's Sibling With More Fire

E.H. Taylor Small Batch is produced at Buffalo Trace and shares the distillery's low-rye Mashbill #1 with Eagle Rare, making it one of the closest DNA matches to the bottle you're replacing. Bottled in bond at 100 proof — a full 10 proof points above Eagle Rare — it carries a rich red hue and a thick, oily texture that immediately signals more intensity on the palate. The nose is complex with cherry, chocolate, and tobacco, while the taste starts with a touch of heat before transitioning through sweet vanilla, fruit, spice, and oak. The finish explodes with charred oak and black pepper before returning to lingering vanilla and cherry. It's harder to find than Eagle Rare but typically available at MSRP around $40 when you do spot it. Buy it now!

Henry McKenna 10 Year BIB: The Award-Winner That Punches Up

Henry McKenna 10 Year Single Barrel Bottled-in-Bond shocked the bourbon world when it won Best in Show Whiskey at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition — a title that had traditionally belonged to far more expensive bottles. Produced by Heaven Hill using the same mashbill as Elijah Craig (75% corn, 13% rye, 12% barley), it is one of the longest-aged bottled-in-bond whiskeys regularly available, resting through 40 Kentucky seasons. The nose brings amber honey, honeysuckle, vanilla crème, malted cereal, and roasted peanut, while the palate delivers musty oak, dark caramel, honey-roasted peanuts, orange peel, and cinnamon. Being a true single barrel release, variation exists between bottles, but the floor of quality here is consistently impressive for its price point of around $45–$55. Buy it now!

Maker's Mark 46: Wheated Complexity Through French Oak

Maker's Mark 46 takes the familiar wheated bourbon base of the standard Maker's expression and pushes it into new territory through an innovative secondary aging process. After initial maturation, seared French oak staves are inserted into the barrel and the bourbon is aged further, developing bolder, more complex flavors while eliminating the bitterness that can come with extended time in wood. The result is a noticeably richer profile than its parent — fuller caramel and vanilla notes balanced by a subtle spice and a creamy mouthfeel that Eagle Rare drinkers tend to appreciate immediately. At around $40 and reliably available nationwide, it offers a consistent, polished sipping experience without the hunt. It's a strong argument for what thoughtful innovation in the finishing process can achieve. Buy it now!

Knob Creek 9 Year Small Batch: Bold, Barrel-Forward, and Reliable

Knob Creek 9 Year is one of Jim Beam's most beloved premium offerings, and it earns that status through sheer flavor density rather than age-statement prestige. Bottled at 100 proof with a confirmed 9-year age statement, it delivers a full-bodied, richly textured pour with pronounced notes of brown sugar, roasted nuts, vanilla, and a good dose of toasted oak. It's more intense and char-forward than Eagle Rare, which makes it a satisfying upgrade for drinkers who feel the Buffalo Trace expression is a touch too gentle. The price point — typically around $35 — makes it an easy reach, and its consistent availability in most U.S. markets is a practical advantage over allocated Buffalo Trace products. For cocktails or neat sipping, few bottles at this price deliver more presence. Buy it now!

Bib & Tucker Small Batch: Craft Elegance at Mid-Shelf

Bib & Tucker Small Batch Bourbon is produced by 35 Maple Street Spirits and brings a craft-leaning sensibility to a style that competes directly with established Kentucky names. The mash bill leans on corn with a modest rye content, and the bourbon is aged 6 years before being blended into small batches that typically run around 53% ABV, giving it a bit more presence than Eagle Rare's 45%. The nose opens with chestnut, dried fruit, and caramel, while the palate offers a refined balance of baking spice, vanilla, and toasted oak without the aggressive bite of higher-proof alternatives. It's smooth enough to drink neat but has enough structure to hold up beautifully in a glass with a large ice cube. At around $55, it sits in competitive territory but delivers a level of polish that justifies its place on the shelf. Buy it now!

Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage: The Smartest Buy in the Category

Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage is one of bourbon's most persistently underrated bottles — a true single barrel expression from Heaven Hill with a vintage year on each label that tells you exactly when that particular barrel was filled. Each annual release selects barrels aged approximately 8 to 10 years, bottled at 86.6 proof with no blending, meaning every bottle reflects one specific barrel's journey through a Kentucky warehouse. The nose is smooth and sweet, with vanilla leading alongside hints of honey, cotton candy, and oak, while the palate delivers a quick burst of spice followed by honey, vanilla, and lingering warmth. At under $35 in most markets, it is arguably the best single barrel value in American whiskey — a bottle that regularly outperforms far more expensive competition and requires no secondary-market hunting to find.
