8 Affordable Wheated Bourbons That Beat Chasing Weller In 2026

Stop Overpaying for Weller — The Wheated Shelf Has Never Been Better

W.L. Weller Special Reserve carries a $30 MSRP, but in most markets it sits at $45–55 because demand for the entire Weller line consistently outpaces supply. The halo effect of Pappy Van Winkle and a surge in interest in wheated bourbon have turned what should be an everyday pour into a frustrating allocation hunt. The good news for 2026 is that the sub-$50 wheated bourbon shelf has grown dramatically, with distilleries from Kentucky to Colorado and Missouri producing award-winning expressions that are actually on shelves at sensible prices. Wheat replaces rye as the secondary grain in the mash bill, producing a rounder, softer, almost bread-and-honey sweetness that makes these whiskeys famously easy to drink — even at higher proof. The eight bottles below are worth buying on their own terms, not just as consolation prizes.

Larceny Small Batch: Heaven Hill's Everyday Wheater

Heaven Hill's Larceny Small Batch is arguably the best pure value in the wheated bourbon category, retailing around $30 and sitting reliably on shelves nationwide. It traces its roots to the Old Fitzgerald brand, which Heaven Hill acquired in the 1990s, and was positioned as the accessible, everyday answer to Maker's Mark and Weller Special Reserve when it launched in 2012. Bottled at 92 proof, it delivers a nose of toffee, candy corn, and subtle vanilla, while the palate reveals nutty caramel, fudge, and a hint of cherry with a cinnamon-spiced finish. Its wheated mash bill contains 25% more wheat than many competing brands, contributing to its notably smooth and sweet character. For anyone seeking a dependable cocktail base or a neat sipper that won't demand a second mortgage, Larceny is the first bottle to reach for. Buy it now!

Maker's Mark: The Wheated Benchmark That's Actually There

Maker's Mark is the most consistently available wheated bourbon on the market, using a mash bill widely reported to be around 70% corn, 16% soft red winter wheat, and 14% malted barley — a recipe Bill Samuels Sr. developed specifically to create a smooth, never sharp bourbon. At approximately $25, it delivers a nose of vanilla, caramel, sweet grain, red fruit, and light baking spices, with a palate that is rounded and medium-weight, showing butterscotch, toffee, cherry, and toasted oak. The finish is long and clean, with lingering vanilla and caramel corn, and it earns gold medals on the competition circuit with impressive consistency. Unlike Weller, you can walk into almost any bottle shop in the country and grab one without any allocation anxiety or secondary-market markup. It is not a complex bottle, but at this price and availability, that's a feature rather than a flaw. Buy it now!

Green River Wheated: Owensboro's Award-Winning Overachiever

Green River Distilling Co. in Owensboro, Kentucky has a history stretching back to 1885, and its revived operation — now part of the Bardstown Bourbon Co. family — has quickly become known for producing affordable, well-crafted whiskey. Its Wheated Bourbon uses a mash bill of 70% corn, 21% wheat, and 9% malted barley, aged at least four years and bottled at 90 proof, delivering aromas of peach and caramel with soft bread notes on the nose. The palate is silky, showing toffee, toasted hazelnut, and gentle spice, making it one of the most drinkable expressions in this price range at around $35. Critically, it was named both 'Best Overall Bourbon' and 'Best Wheated Bourbon' at the 2025 New York World Spirits Competition — serious hardware for a bottle that's actually easy to find. If you want proof that the wheated category has expanded well beyond Weller's orbit, Green River is your exhibit A. Buy it now!

Maker's Mark Cask Strength: Maximum Wheated Flavor, Still Under $50

Maker's Mark Cask Strength takes the same iconic recipe — 70% corn, 16% red winter wheat, 14% malted barley — skips the dilution water entirely, and bottles it straight from the barrel after a minimum of seven years of aging, with each batch landing somewhere between 108 and 114 proof. The nose opens on rich brown sugar, praline, and baked wheat bread, while the palate delivers honey, vanilla bean, toffee, and cherry with an ethanol presence that is, impressively, almost imperceptible for the proof. The finish runs long and decadent, with honey, tobacco, and a touch of molasses. At around $50, it delivers a cask-strength experience with the polish and consistency of a distillery that has been refining the same mash bill for decades, making it one of the top-scoring sub-$50 bottles in any category, not just wheated bourbon. It's the bottle to reach for when you want to understand what barrel-proof wheated bourbon can do without spending Weller Antique 107 money — if you can even find that. Buy it now!

Penelope Wheated: The Four-Grain Twist on the Wheater Style

Launched nationally in early 2025, Penelope Wheated is the fifth core expression from Penelope Bourbon and takes an unusual approach: it keeps rye in the mash bill alongside wheat, resulting in a four-grain recipe of 74% corn, 16% wheat, 7% rye, and 3% malted barley, sourced from MGP in Indiana and bottled at 95 proof. The nose offers warm cinnamon stick, caramel, orange zest, and a hint of nutmeg, while the palate delivers honey, caramel apple, vanilla, and rose-like sweetness with a finish of brown sugar and gentle oak tannin. The retained rye component delivers a subtle yet noticeable spice that runs throughout, giving it just enough deviation from standard wheaters like Larceny or Maker's to stand on its own. At $39.99 and available nationwide, it punches above its price point and earns credit for being bottled without chill filtration, preserving texture. For bourbon drinkers who want wheated softness but find purely wheat-forward bourbons a touch flat, this is the bottle that threads that needle. Buy it now!

Bardstown Origin Wheated: Craft Credibility at Bottled-in-Bond Strength

Bardstown Bourbon Company's Origin Series represents the first whiskey fully distilled and aged entirely on-site at their Nelson County, Kentucky facility, making it a genuine estate product in a market flooded with sourced expressions. The Wheated Bourbon is a six-year-old Bottled-in-Bond release carrying a mash bill of 68% corn, 20% wheat, and 12% malted barley, bottled at the government-mandated 100 proof standard the BiB designation requires. On the palate it highlights baked peach, cocoa, and toffee with a silky mouthfeel and a smooth, lingering finish — the wheat softens the profile without sacrificing depth or structure. At approximately $50, it sits at the top of this price range but delivers genuine craft distillery quality that most allocated bottles twice the price struggle to match. For anyone who cares about provenance, transparency, and actual age statements, Bardstown Origin Wheated checks every box. Buy it now!

Redemption Wheated: Indiana's High-Wheat Outlier

Redemption is a brand best known for rye, which makes its Wheated Bourbon an easy bottle to overlook — and a genuinely rewarding one to discover. Distilled at MGP in Indiana, it features one of the most aggressive wheat ratios in the affordable category: a mash bill of 51% corn, 45% winter wheat, and just 4% malted barley, bottled at 96 proof and aged at least four years. The nose offers pear, vanilla, and candied ginger, while the palate delivers an unusual combination of roasted coffee, hazelnut, and baking spice over a creamy mouthfeel — a profile that diverges meaningfully from the standard caramel-and-oak wheated template. The finish lingers with fresh baked bread and light oak, and the bottle earned a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. At around $46–47 and available nationally, it's the bottle for drinkers who want to understand just how far wheat can push a bourbon's character before it stops feeling like bourbon. Buy it now!

Holladay Soft Red Wheat: Missouri's 170-Year-Old Secret

Holladay Distillery in Weston, Missouri has been producing whiskey since 1856, making it one of the oldest continuously operating distillery sites in the country — a pedigree that gets nowhere near the attention it deserves. Its Soft Red Wheat Bourbon is Bottled-in-Bond and aged for at least six years, built on a mash bill of 73% corn, 15% soft red winter wheat, and 12% malted barley, with every step of production carried out in Missouri rather than Kentucky. The whiskey offers aromas of vanilla cake, red fruit, and toffee, while the palate brings honeyed grain, caramel, and a touch of spice before a smooth, lingering 100-proof finish. The bottled-in-bond designation means it's produced at a single distillery in a single season and aged a minimum of four years — more quality assurance than most bottles in this price range offer. For drinkers who have worked through the obvious Kentucky wheated options and want something that rewards curiosity on the first pour, Holladay is the answer. Buy it now!
