12 Whiskeys to Grab Instead of Buffalo Trace

Time to Break Up with Your Buffalo Trace Habit

Buffalo Trace has long been one of America's most dependable everyday bourbons — approachable, sweet, and versatile at 90 proof. But its reputation has made it a victim of its own success. What was once an easy sub-$20 find has crept up in price and become genuinely difficult to locate in many markets. The good news is that the bourbon landscape has never been richer, and there are bottles on shelves right now that can fill that role just as well — and in some cases, better. Whether you want something in the same price bracket, a step up in complexity, or a craft release worth tracking down, the options below cover the full range.

Four Roses Small Batch: The Everyday Standard-Bearer

Four Roses Small Batch is widely regarded as one of the best everyday bourbons in the world, and it makes a near-perfect substitute for Buffalo Trace. It is cut to the same 90 proof and hovers in the same price bracket, making the swap essentially seamless. The bourbon is a blend of high- and low-rye mashbills aged six to seven years, which gives it a proven consistency that is rare at this price point. On the palate, expect caramel, ripe fruit, and gentle spice — similar drinking flexibility to Buffalo Trace but with a distinct floral character that sets it apart. Buy it now!

Elijah Craig Small Batch: The Underrated Shelf Staple

Produced by Heaven Hill using a mashbill of roughly 78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% malted barley, Elijah Craig Small Batch is one of the most consistent value pours in Kentucky bourbon. Batches typically contain whiskey aged anywhere from 8 to 12 years, which brings a prominent oak influence that Buffalo Trace drinkers will appreciate. The nose offers vanilla bean, sweet fruit, and fresh mint, while the palate delivers caramel, ripe apple, and baking spice with a long, slightly toasty finish. It is earthier and bolder than Buffalo Trace, making it an excellent gateway into higher-proof, more structured bourbons. Buy it now!

Wild Turkey 101: More Proof, More Personality

Wild Turkey 101 is one of the most dependable value bourbons on the market, and its extra proof — 101 compared to Buffalo Trace's 90 — gives it an edge in cocktails and sipping alike. The nose announces itself immediately with vanilla, cinnamon sugar, and fresh toffee before deeper notes of charred oak and burnt toast begin to emerge. It uses a higher-rye mashbill than Buffalo Trace, lending it a spicier, more assertive character that rewards those looking for something with a bit more muscle. It is also one of the best choices for an Old Fashioned or Manhattan when Buffalo Trace is nowhere to be found. Buy it now!

Benchmark Bonded: The Budget-Smart Swap

Benchmark Bonded is distilled at Buffalo Trace Distillery itself, using the same low-rye Mashbill #1 that underpins the flagship Buffalo Trace expression. Bottled at 100 proof and available for around $20, it delivers a finish of ripe plum, peach, vanilla, and oak — familiar territory for any Buffalo Trace fan. For drinkers who are tired of paying over $30 for a bottle that used to cost less than $20, Benchmark Bonded is the most direct, cost-effective alternative available. It is not the most complex bourbon on this list, but as a no-fuss everyday pour drunk neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail, it punches well above its price.

Michter's US*1: The Polished Everyday Sipper

Michter's US*1 Small Batch Bourbon is made at the brand's Shively Distillery in Louisville and was named the 2024 Most Admired Whiskey in the World — remarkable for a brand that still flies under the mainstream radar. The palate delivers candied apple, muscovado sugar, a burst of citrus acidity, and rich caramel sweetness, making it one of the more fruit-forward bourbons in this category. It is slightly softer and more polished than Buffalo Trace, with a sweet, approachable character that consistently earns praise from both enthusiasts and casual drinkers. The price sits a step above Buffalo Trace's MSRP, but the quality gap more than justifies the difference. Buy it now!

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked: Rich, Dark, and Layered

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked takes the standard Woodford mashbill of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley and runs it through a second maturation in a freshly toasted and charred new oak barrel, resulting in a bourbon that skews darker and more wood-driven than Buffalo Trace. The nose opens with caramel, toasted vanilla, and dark cherry, while the palate adds roasted mocha, candied pecans, and dried fruit before a warm, drying finish with lingering clove. At around $55, it costs more than Buffalo Trace but offers a meaningfully elevated experience for drinkers who want more barrel character in their glass. It is widely considered one of the finest double-oaked expressions on the market. Buy it now!

E.H. Taylor Small Batch: Bottled-in-Bond Brilliance

The E.H. Taylor line is part of Buffalo Trace Distillery's Mashbill #1 family, so it shares some DNA with the flagship expression — but the bottled-in-bond requirement means it is always 100 proof and aged a minimum of four years under federal supervision. The small batch expression offers a complex profile of cherry, chocolate, spice, and oak, delivering a satisfying blend of sweet, spicy, and barrel-driven flavors that rewards slow sipping. It costs more than standard Buffalo Trace but is still more reliably findable than many of the distillery's hyped allocations. For drinkers who want something rooted in the same tradition but with more structure and proof, E.H. Taylor Small Batch is a natural move. Buy it now!

Breckenridge Bourbon: Colorado Craft with Real Character

Breckenridge Bourbon is produced at high altitude in the Colorado Rockies, where the dramatic temperature swings between day and night accelerate the interaction between spirit and barrel, producing a flavour profile that belies the distillery's relatively short maturation periods. The mashbill blends locally sourced high-altitude grains with a touch of rye, resulting in a smooth, approachable bourbon with notes of caramel, honey, vanilla, and light spice. It sits in the same easy-drinking zone as Buffalo Trace and is a strong representative of the American craft movement that has produced genuinely competitive alternatives to the big Kentucky players. It is widely available nationally and typically retails around the $35–40 mark. Buy it now!

Knob Creek Single Barrel: Bold and Barrel-Driven

Knob Creek Single Barrel is aged nine years and bottled at 120 proof, making it significantly more intense than Buffalo Trace's 90-proof profile — but for drinkers who have always felt Buffalo Trace could use a little more depth, this is the logical next step. The palate delivers pronounced oak, vanilla, and caramel, with each barrel adding its own subtle variation in dark fruit, spice, and tobacco character. It is robust and full-bodied, a true sipping whiskey that can also anchor a cocktail with authority. A small pour goes a long way, and adding a few drops of water opens it up considerably, revealing layers that casual whiskey drinkers rarely encounter at this price. Buy it now!

Rowan's Creek Small Batch: Under-the-Radar Willett Value

Rowan's Creek is a small batch bourbon from Willett Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky — one of the most respected craft operations in the state — bottled at 100.1 proof with a mashbill of around 72% corn, 13% rye, and 15% malted barley. Since the distillery shifted to using its own in-house distillate, Rowan's Creek has become one of the most accessible entry points into genuinely Willett-distilled whiskey, which typically commands a premium under the family crest label. The nose leads with a grassy, rye-forward character of mint, hay, and wildflower before giving way to caramel, vanilla, and oak on the palate. It is an honest, value-driven craft bourbon that sits comfortably in the same everyday-sipper category as Buffalo Trace. Buy it now!

Willett Kentucky Vintage: Bardstown's Best-Kept Secret

Willett Distillery's Kentucky Vintage Bourbon is a small batch expression that consistently earns praise for its smoothness, depth, and balance at a price point that still undercuts many of Buffalo Trace's more coveted releases. The nose leads with vanilla, caramel, and oak, while the palate delivers smooth layers of spice, more vanilla, and warm caramel that linger into a long, satisfying finish. Willett's craftsmanship is evident throughout — this is a distillery that has been producing Kentucky bourbon since 1935 and has a genuine mastery of barrel selection and blending. For drinkers who want a craft alternative with serious pedigree behind it, Kentucky Vintage is one of the most rewarding bottles on the shelf. Buy it now!

Green River Bourbon: A Craft Revival Worth Knowing

Green River Bourbon comes from the revived Green River Distilling Co. in Owensboro, Kentucky — a name with roots going back to the 1800s that has been brought back to life with modern craft ambitions. The distillery uses a traditional Kentucky mash bill and limestone-filtered Green River water, producing a bourbon with bold, rounded flavors of caramel, brown sugar, dried fruit, and gentle oak spice. It sits at a competitive price point and has been steadily building a reputation among enthusiasts looking for craft quality without boutique markups. For Buffalo Trace drinkers who want something historically grounded, made in Kentucky, and reliably available, Green River is one of the most exciting value discoveries in the current bourbon market.
