11 Blanton's Alternatives That Cost Far Less

The Blanton's Problem — Great Bourbon, Impossible Price

Blanton's Single Barrel holds a genuine place in bourbon history as the first commercially marketed single-barrel bourbon, introduced in 1984 at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. It runs on Buffalo Trace's high-rye Mash Bill #2 and is bottled at 93 proof, with barrels typically aged six to eight years in the metal-clad Warehouse H. The bourbon's combination of approachable sweetness, light spice, and an iconic round bottle with collectible horse-and-jockey stoppers turned it into a cultural touchstone. Its MSRP sits around $65–$75, but secondary market bottles routinely sell for two to three times that, and most stores receive allocations too small to satisfy demand. The encouraging news is that several readily available bourbons deliver the same sweet-and-spicy complexity — and some outperform Blanton's in blind tastings — for a fraction of what you'd pay on the secondary market.

Four Roses Single Barrel: The Most Direct Substitute

Four Roses Single Barrel is widely considered the closest direct substitute for Blanton's, sharing its single-barrel format, fruit-forward character, and high-rye mash bill. The standard expression uses the OBSV recipe — a 35% rye mash bill paired with Four Roses' "V" yeast strain — bottled at a mandatory 100 proof, uncut and non-chill-filtered. At the 2024 World Whiskies Awards, it was named World's Best Single Barrel Bourbon, a title that cemented its reputation among serious drinkers. Expect notes of ripe orchard fruit, floral aromatics, baking spice, and a long, layered finish. It typically retails for around $45–$55, making it a genuinely compelling alternative that often beats Blanton's in side-by-side tastings. Buy it now!

Evan Williams Single Barrel: The $35 Sleeper

Heaven Hill's Evan Williams Single Barrel is one of the most underrated value plays in the single-barrel bourbon category, typically landing on shelves for around $30–$35. Each bottle carries a vintage date reflecting the exact year the whiskey was barreled, giving it a transparency and specificity that many bourbons twice its price cannot match. The mash bill is 78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% malted barley, bottled at 86.6 proof after roughly seven to eight years of maturation. On the palate, expect caramel, vanilla, light charred oak, baked apple, and a lingering peppery spice on the finish. Unlike Blanton's, you won't need to scour every store in town — it's widely distributed across the U.S. and consistently available. Buy it now!

Russell's Reserve Single Barrel: Complexity at $55

Produced at Wild Turkey Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, Russell's Reserve Single Barrel Bourbon has been a respected fixture in the single-barrel category since its introduction in 2013. Barrels tend to range from eight to ten years old and are bottled near barrel proof, giving it a richness and intensity that rewards drinking neat. Reviewers consistently note toasted brown sugar, charred oak, vanilla cream, peppery maple, and a medium-long finish with faint clove. The profile shifts meaningfully from barrel to barrel, which is part of what keeps it interesting across multiple bottles. At around $55–$60 with consistent shelf availability, it offers complexity that meaningfully outpaces its price point. Buy it now!

Elijah Craig Small Batch: Heaven Hill's Reliable Anchor

Elijah Craig Small Batch, produced by Heaven Hill in Louisville, Kentucky, is one of the benchmarks of the under-$30 bourbon category and routinely punches above its weight class. Bottled at 94 proof (47% ABV) from a wheated-complementary mash bill that incorporates corn, rye, and malted barley, it delivers a warm spice and subtle smoke character from Level 3 charred oak barrels. The palate opens with caramel, vanilla, and a gentle cinnamon heat, finishing cleanly with a touch of oak. It has long been considered the more refined step up from Evan Williams Single Barrel from the same Heaven Hill stable, offering extra richness and depth for only a few dollars more. For drinkers who love Blanton's approachable sweetness, Elijah Craig Small Batch is a natural daily sipper that never requires a hunt. Buy it now!

Wild Turkey Rare Breed: Barrel Proof Without the Hunt

Wild Turkey Rare Breed is a barrel-proof blended expression from Wild Turkey Distillery, typically bottled between 112 and 116 proof — no water added, straight from the cask. It blends bourbons aged six, eight, and twelve years, giving it a depth and layered complexity that is uncommon for its price, which typically sits under $55. The nose delivers intense vanilla, dried fruit, and baking spice, while the palate opens up with caramel, charred oak, pepper, and a bold, satisfying heat. For fans of Blanton's who want the sweet-and-spicy balance but with more intensity, Rare Breed turns up the volume without turning up the price. It is consistently stocked at major retailers nationwide, making it one of the most accessible barrel-proof bourbons on the market. Buy it now!

Benchmark Single Barrel: Buffalo Trace DNA for $25

Benchmark Single Barrel is produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery, the same hallowed ground as Blanton's itself, and that shared DNA is evident in the glass. At around $25 per bottle, it is one of the most affordable single-barrel offerings in the country and is far easier to find at a fair price than anything else in the Buffalo Trace portfolio. The palate delivers the familiar Buffalo Trace sweetness — honey, orchard fruit, and soft caramel — though with less barrel concentration and complexity than Blanton's due to differences in barrel selection and aging. It won't replicate Blanton's full richness, but for mixing into cocktails or exploring the single-barrel format without financial commitment, nothing else gets you this close to the source for so little. Availability is strong, and you can open it without any regret. Buy it now!

Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve: Big, Bold, and Honest

Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve, produced by Jim Beam at Clermont, Kentucky, is a 120-proof single-barrel bourbon that delivers brute force alongside genuine complexity. Each bottle is drawn from an individual barrel, with the barrel number printed on the label — a practice that mirrors Blanton's single-barrel transparency. Reviewers note strong notes of caramel, dark cherry, toasted oak, vanilla, and a bold spicy finish that lingers well. The high proof means it opens up beautifully with a few drops of water or a single ice cube, making it versatile for both neat sipping and elevated cocktails. Priced around $45–$55 and widely available, it has earned recognition from the International Wine & Spirits Competition and the International Spirits Challenge. Buy it now!

Maker's Mark 46: The Wheated Option Under $45

Maker's Mark 46 is the go-to recommendation for Blanton's drinkers who love approachable sweetness but prefer a wheated mash bill over a rye-forward one. The production process starts with fully matured Maker's Mark at cask strength, then inserts ten seared virgin French oak staves into the barrel and finishes it for nine weeks in a limestone cellar — the result is bolder and more complex than the standard expression without the bitterness that comes from extended aging. Expect a soft, round profile of caramel, vanilla, French oak spice, and dried fruit with a clean finish. At around $40–$45, it remains one of the most consistent values in its tier, and Beam Suntory has notably held its price steady for years. If Blanton's appeals to you for its drinkability rather than its rye kick, Maker's 46 scratches that itch at a fraction of the market price. Buy it now!

Eagle Rare 10 Year: A Fellow Buffalo Trace Alumnus

Eagle Rare 10 Year is distilled at Buffalo Trace Distillery using Mash Bill #1 — the lower-rye recipe — and aged a minimum of ten years, bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV). Where Blanton's leans fruit-forward and lightly spicy due to its higher rye content, Eagle Rare trends softer and more oak-forward, with notes of toffee, honey, dried herbs, leather, and a long, complex finish. It was introduced in its current form in 1975, making it one of the older names in American whiskey, and it consistently performs well in competitions. At an MSRP of around $35–$45, it is technically allocated like Blanton's, but far easier to find at or near retail — making it a smarter spend for drinkers who want Buffalo Trace quality without secondary market prices. It's a profile that complements rather than copies Blanton's, and fans of one almost always enjoy the other. Buy it now!

Henry McKenna 10 Year BiB: The Award Winner Worth Tracking Down

Henry McKenna 10 Year Single Barrel Bottled-in-Bond, produced by Heaven Hill, earned a wave of attention after winning Best in Show Whiskey at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and the demand surge it caused has still not fully subsided. At 100 proof, 10 years old, single barrel, and Bottled-in-Bond certified, it checks more technical boxes than Blanton's at a lower price — typically $35–$50 at retail when you can find it. The palate shows dark caramel, dried fruit, vanilla, baking spice, and a satisfying oaky finish that reflects the full decade of aging. The Bottled-in-Bond designation guarantees it was distilled at one distillery in one distillation season, adding a layer of provenance that discerning drinkers appreciate. It can still be elusive in some markets, but patient shoppers are consistently rewarded. Buy it now!

Larceny Barrel Proof: The Craft-Friendly Wildcard

Larceny Barrel Proof is a wheated, cask-strength bourbon from Heaven Hill released in three batches per year — A (January), B (May), and C (September) — each bottled at a different proof ranging from roughly 117 to 126+. The wheated mash bill (replacing rye with wheat as the secondary grain) gives it a plush, rounded sweetness that is distinct from Blanton's rye-forward bite, yet equally complex and satisfying to drink neat. Each batch release brings variation in proof and flavor profile, giving collectors and enthusiasts a reason to revisit the label multiple times per year. Pricing holds comfortably around $45–$55 at retail, and while the B525 batch has earned particular praise, all three releases consistently outperform their price in blind comparisons. For those who want a serious barrel-proof experience without the Blanton's markup, Larceny Barrel Proof is one of the most compelling options on the market today. Buy it now!
