What to Get a Groomsman That Isn't a Flask

The Flask Is Retired — Here's What to Give Instead

Groomsmen gifts have a reputation for being predictable — engraved flasks, generic keychains, and things that end up in a drawer by Monday. The guys standing up at your wedding deserve something that actually reflects the occasion and, better yet, something they'll use long after the reception ends. Whiskey-themed gifts have become a go-to for a reason: they're personal, they feel celebratory, and they span a wide range of budgets without feeling cheap. The key is moving beyond the obvious and thinking about what kind of whiskey drinker each guy actually is — whether he's a casual sipper, a home bartender, or someone who genuinely geeks out over single barrels and tasting notes. With a little thought, a groomsman gift can be something he brags about rather than something he quietly regifts.

The Glencairn Glass

The Glencairn glass has become the gold standard for whiskey tasting worldwide, recognized by distilleries, collectors, and enthusiasts for its unique tulip shape that enhances the aroma and flavor of fine Scotch, bourbon, and rye. The wide bowl allows the spirit to breathe and release layers of aroma, while the tapered rim concentrates those aromas directly toward the nose. Made in Scotland from lead-free crystal, the glass is dishwasher safe and built to last a lifetime. Engravers can etch a groomsman's name, initials, or a short personal message directly onto the glass, transforming it from barware into a genuine keepsake. It's the kind of gift that gets pulled out every time he pours something worth savoring. Buy it now!

Whiskey Decanter Set: For the Guy Who Entertains

A well-chosen decanter set is one of the few groomsman gifts that genuinely stays in rotation rather than retiring to a shelf after the wedding. For the whiskey connoisseur, a sophisticated decanter is the centerpiece of any bar cart, placed alongside bottles of his favorite spirit and cocktail-making essentials. Lead-free glass decanters now offer the same optical clarity and weight as traditional crystal, without any risk of lead leaching into the spirit even with long-term storage. Each groomsman can have his name, initials, or a personal message laser-engraved on his decanter and matching rocks glasses, making every pour a reminder of the occasion. Pair it with a bottle of something worth drinking and the gift essentially packages itself. Buy it now!

Distillery Tour Experience: A Gift He'll Actually Talk About

A distillery tour gift certificate is the kind of present that creates a story rather than just an object. Places like Kings County Distillery in Brooklyn take guests through milling, mashing, fermenting, and distilling before entering the barrel room for a tasting, with expert hosts teaching guests how to nose, taste, and evaluate whiskey like a distiller. For a blending-focused experience, Baltimore Spirits Company offers a hands-on session where guests taste four different barrel finishes of their award-winning Epoch Rye and craft their own bottle to take home. Tennessee Whiskey Tours runs daily buses out of Nashville to distilleries including Jack Daniel's and Uncle Nearest, making it easy to build around a bachelor party weekend. Gift tickets are flexible, purchasable in advance, and suit groomsmen at any level of whiskey knowledge.

Old Fashioned Gift Set: Ready to Mix on Night One

An Old Fashioned gift set is a well-rounded bar gift for the groomsman who appreciates classic cocktails, bringing together whiskey, bitters, and quality glassware so he can craft the perfect drink from the moment he gets home. The best versions of this set include a bottle of quality bourbon or rye, a hand-selected cocktail bitters, a large ice mold for the signature sphere or rock, and a sturdy rocks glass — some versions even throw in a bar spoon and cocktail picks. It's a particularly strong choice because all of the components are genuinely consumed and replaced rather than displayed and forgotten. The format also lets you customize by swapping in a whiskey brand you know he'll love, making it feel personal without requiring engraving lead times. Pair everything in a wooden crate or custom box for a presentation that looks as good as it drinks. Buy it now!

Whiskey Stones Gift Set

Whiskey stones made from recycled bourbon barrel oak are a smarter alternative to the standard soapstone sets that risk scratching expensive glassware or adding unwanted mineral notes to a fine dram. These hollow wooden cubes are crafted from 100% American oak recovered from actual bourbon barrels, then sealed and treated to prevent warping or swelling from moisture. They can be filled and frozen to chill a drink without the dilution that comes from regular ice — an important consideration for anyone drinking quality single malt or aged bourbon neat. The barrel provenance gives them an authenticity that plain stone sets lack, and the rustic, handcrafted appearance sits well on any home bar. They're available in sets of four to six, making it easy to pack alongside another gift or gift them on their own at a sensible price point. Buy it now!

Mini Aging Barrel: Let Him Make His Own Whiskey

A personalized mini oak aging barrel is one of the few groomsman gifts that keeps delivering long after the wedding day. These handmade barrels are crafted from authentic American oak, charred to a medium level to ensure optimal flavor development, and arrive with a stand, spigot, bung, and detailed curing instructions. Because smaller barrels have more wood-to-liquid contact, they impart oak character significantly faster than full-size barrels — a groomsman could have a mature spirit in as little as one to two years, or choose to let it rest longer. The barrel works not just for whiskey and bourbon but also for rum, tequila, and even wine, making it versatile enough for any taste. Most makers offer free laser engraving with a name, initials, or custom message, turning a functional piece of barware into a genuine keepsake from the wedding.

Whiskey Tasting Journal: For the Guy Who Has Opinions About Every Pour

A whiskey tasting journal is the kind of gift that turns a casual drinker into a more thoughtful one — and costs a fraction of a fancy bottle. The best pocket-sized options, like the 33 Whiskeys journal from Portland's 33 Books Co., are thinner than an iPhone, fit in a back pocket, and are made with 100% recycled paper printed with soy-based inks. Structured pages walk the user through appearance, aroma, taste, and finish without overcomplicating the moment, while a built-in flavor wheel makes it easy to recall what made a particular dram stand out weeks later. Handmade leather-bound versions available on Etsy let you go a step further with personalization, adding names or a wedding date to the cover for a more ceremonial touch. It pairs well with any other whiskey gift in the box and doubles as a subtle nudge to explore beyond the usual shelf picks.

Barrel Stave Wall Art: Bar Decor He'll Actually Hang Up

Reclaimed barrel stave wall art is cut directly from authentic American oak whiskey barrels that were used to age bourbon or Tennessee whiskey, meaning each piece carries real char, grain variation, and faint spirit aroma from years inside a working distillery. Makers like Holtz Leather source their staves directly from Lynchburg, Tennessee, using authentic barrels, while WhiskeyMade crafts staves from 100% American oak recycled from Kentucky distilleries along the Bourbon Trail. Each stave can be laser-engraved with a name, initials, wedding date, or a chosen saying, making it a genuinely personalized keepsake with a story behind the raw material. It's a step up from generic wall decor — something that belongs in a home bar, a man cave, or above the fireplace, and that looks better the more worn-in it gets.
