How J. Rieger & Co. Elevates Bourbon Cocktails

When it comes to crafting the perfect bourbon cocktail, every detail matters, the balance of sweetness, the depth of the spirit, and that final touch that ties everything together. For many bartenders and home mixologists alike, that missing piece has a name: J. Rieger & Co. Known for its rich history and innovative approach to American whiskey, this Kansas City distillery has quietly become a game-changer behind the bar. Whether you’re mixing an Old Fashioned, a Boulevardier, or experimenting with something entirely new, J. Rieger & Co. doesn’t just complement bourbon, it elevates it.

A Legacy Distilled

Founded in 1887 and revived over a century later, J. Rieger & Co. carries a history as bold as its whiskey. Once lost to Prohibition, the brand has reclaimed its place in America’s spirits scene by honoring tradition while pushing flavor forward. That legacy adds not just authenticity to your cocktails, but a story worth sharing every time you pour.

Flavor That Balances and Elevates

What sets J. Rieger & Co. apart is its layered, versatile profile. With notes that mingle spice, vanilla, and oak, it enhances bourbon’s richness without overpowering it. In cocktails, that means smoother sips, deeper character, and a balance that turns a good drink into a memorable one.

Blunderbuss: A Sparkling Twist on Bourbon

Rieger’s Straight Bourbon forms the bold base of the Blunderbuss, a refreshing riff on a whiskey fizz. Shaken with 0.50 oz Giffard Peche de Vigne, 0.75 oz simple syrup, and 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice, then strained into a Collins glass over ice and topped with 1.50 oz sparkling water, it strikes the perfect balance of bright citrus, lush stone fruit, and effervescence. Garnish with a lemon wheel and sprig of mint for a crisp, lively finish.

Boulevardier: Bittersweet and Timeless

This Prohibition-era classic pairs equal parts of rich and complex flavors. Stir 1 oz Rieger Bourbon, 1 oz sweet vermouth (such as Lustau Vermut Rojo), and 1 oz red aperitivo (ideally a 50/50 split of Cappelletti and Bruto Americano) with ice until chilled. Strain over a large rock and garnish with an orange slice. The result: a bittersweet, spirit-forward cocktail that brings together history, elegance, and bourbon’s depth.

Mint Julep: Southern Charm in a Cup

The Mint Julep is a timeless showcase for bourbon’s richness, softened by mint and sugar. Start by lightly muddling 5–6 large mint leaves with ¼ oz simple syrup in a julep cup. Add 2 oz Rieger Bourbon, then fill with crushed ice and stir until the cup frosts over. Pack with more crushed ice, garnish with a mint bouquet, and sip a drink that’s as crisp and refreshing as it is bold.

Whiskey Smash: Heritage in Every Sip

Sharing its birth year with J. Rieger & Co. (1887), the Whiskey Smash is a refreshing cocktail rooted in history. In a rocks glass, muddle ½ a lemon (cut into four wedges) with ¾ oz simple syrup and 4–5 mint leaves. Add 1½ oz Rieger Bourbon, fill with ice, and stir until chilled. The result is a bright, citrusy, and minty sip that highlights bourbon’s depth while keeping things light and approachable.
