Top 10 Mezcal Picks in 2026

Mezcal has moved well beyond its reputation as simply 'smoky tequila' — it's now one of the most celebrated and nuanced spirit categories in the world. Rooted in centuries of indigenous tradition across Oaxaca and other Mexican states, mezcal is produced from a wide variety of agave plants, each lending its own distinct character to the final spirit. What sets mezcal apart is the artisanal process: agave hearts are typically slow-roasted in earthen pits, crushed by stone tahona wheels, and fermented in open-air wooden vats before distillation, resulting in a depth of flavor that ranges from floral and fruity to deeply smoky and earthy. When evaluating mezcal, it's worth paying attention to the agave variety used, the production method, the region of origin, and whether the spirit is joven (unaged), reposado, or añejo — all of which dramatically shape the tasting experience. As the category continues to grow in 2026, both longtime enthusiasts and curious newcomers have more exceptional options than ever to explore.
