Light, Heat, and the Cork: The Other Enemies

UV light from windows or harsh indoor lighting can break down those delicate aromatic compounds even faster than air alone. Opened bottles are among the most vulnerable and susceptible to abuse from ultraviolet light, oxidation, and certainly volatilization.
Don't overlook the cork either. How tightly you reseal the bottle, or if the cork degrades over time, allows in varying amounts of oxygen — so proper storage is paramount. A dried-out, cracked cork is basically an open invitation for air to get in between pours. It's worth checking the cork periodically, especially on bottles you've had open for a while. What You Can Actually Do About It
There's good news here: you're not completely helpless. A few smart habits can go a long way toward protecting your open bottles.

That doesn't mean you have to chug it — but check in on it. Pour a dram every now and then. Should You Even Worry About This?
